BuildSmart Reno Moves Forward

The projects are moving forward! There is new concrete outside of the A&S Building and a new drain outside of the lakeside door of the FAC. The new nursing and physics classrooms and the students lounge in the A/T are demolished and the insides are under construction. Library bathrooms are beginning to look like bathrooms. The bushes on the back of the ADM are gone and facade work has begun. These are very visible projects, but many more are underway. Photos will be posted to Facebook--here's one from John Merrill.

#TBT on Wednesday

HCC has always been focused on enrollment! Here is one strategy used long ago when the college was still the Northwest Center for UK.

President's Perspective
Dr. Kris Williams

Welcome Tony Mercer!: Instructor Tony Mercer has joined HCC this week as a 12-month faculty member coordinating the Industrial Maintenance Technology program. His office is located in the STC Watkins Lab; his email is tony.mercer@kctcs.edu.

I-69 and HCC: Last week I was at the announcement of the new MOA between Kentucky and Indiana to support development of the I-69 Bridge. Over the weekend I took I-69/IN-37 to Indianapolis. It is a quick route and only section 6, closest to Indianapolis, isn't under development yet into an interstate (but the road is still 4-lane). Have you thought about how the completion of I-69 will change the Kyndle region--and how it could affect the programs we offer at HCC? HCC is participating in a regional forum on I-69 and skills development in the fall in partnership with the I-69 Industry Alliance and USI's Innovation Corridor and we'll continue to focus on how to support this major addition to the region. Many thanks to Brittany Ross of the Surf Kentucky News group (and HCC!) for the photo of Governor Bevin; his field representative, Katie Moyer (blue dress); interim CEO of Kyndle Donna Crooks; and me.

We're More Social!: HCC is now on Instagram at HendersonCCInfo. Follow the feed for photos. Many thanks to John Merrill, Janet Jackson, Jon Reidford, and Jennifer Preston for ensuring a strong digital media presence!

Enrollment Update: The Employee Enrollment meeting yesterday was very helpful in developing strategies and informing the college about enrollment concerns. Plus, everyone received an Ask Me! t-shirt to wear. Please watch for a special email with a meeting summary and info on how to pick up a t-shirt if you weren't able to attend.

Teaching the Underprepared Student: The ACUE Community Blog has a great summary of a new study by CCRC staff. "Effective instruction is key to helping underprepared students, two researchers conclude in a new report released this month.
"Instruction is the core of any developmental education strategy," Thomas Bailey and Shanna Smith Jaggars write in "When College Students Start Behind." The report is the fifth installment of The Century Foundation's ongoing College Completion Series."
Welcome
Meet Heather Roy, MSU-Henderson's new director, from her post on the MSU-Henderson Facebook page. Heather will be on campus 2-3 days per week; MSU will also hire a fulltime recruiter for the HCC site. Photo by John Merrill.

Hello Henderson Regional Campus Community!

My name is Heather Roy and I am honored to serve as your Campus Director. I am a lifelong resident of Webster County, and I have had the pleasure of working in higher education for nearly 20 years in administration, enrollment, and instruction. In my new role, I will serve Murray State University here in Henderson as well as in Madisonville.

As I transition to this position, I cannot thank Mike Freels enough for all he has done to ensure the continued success of MSU-Henderson. His commitment to education in Henderson and surrounding communities has certainly not gone unnoticed. Although retirement will take him from his position here at MSU-Henderson, I am excited to say he has left it in a great position with growing enrollments, an expanded presence, a dedicated staff, and a re-energized MSU connection to students, HCC faculty and staff, and the community. I will do my best to continue to build on the strong tradition he has established for Murray State University here at Henderson Community College. With that said, I look forward to meeting not only our students, but also members of the community. My door is always open, and I would love to talk with you regarding the future of MSU-Henderson.

Should you want to schedule an appointment to meet and let me know how I can better serve this campus and community, please contact me. I can be reached at 270-831-5111 or by cell at 270-635-3816.

Let's work together and make this a great year for MSU-Henderson!

Sincerely,
Heather Roy
