President's Perspective
Dr. Kris Williams

Cookout: The Back to School Cookout has been postponed until next Wednesday. The fun and free food starts at 11:30 a.m. on the 26th.

They're Back: It has been wonderful to see the new energy on campus with the return of the students. There are some great photos on the college Facebook page of returnees. On the enrollment front as per the IR/IE Office--we are down overall, but it is good to see an increase of 12 dual credit students at the Herron Center over last fall's enrollment (HCHS students aren't registered yet):

Headcount is at 1296 (-7% from last year)
Credential-Seeking is at 1156 (-9% from last year)
FTE Home campus is 805 (-6%)
FTE Delivery campus is 885 (-9%)

Many, Many Thanks: There are so many folks to thank as we got students registered, dropped/ added, advised and engaged as they returned. We had 159 students come through Open Registration last Wednesday (more than last fall). Faculty and staff were ready to advise, register and support these students. The Division Chairs and CAO kept an eye on class sections and managed them well. The Campus Engagement Committee worked with the Dairette Grill to have water stations and the College Foundation provided snacks for Monday and Tuesday as we started back. I have great appreciation for everyone pulling together to get our students here and on the right track!

Brookings Report: The Brooking Institute recently released an essay, "Memo to Hillary Clinton: More choice can thwart community college students." The essay begins, "...For example, more than 80 percent of new community college students say they want at least a bachelor's degree but after six years only 15 percent of them have managed to obtain one. Why?"

Help Needed: Please note the article at the bottom of the Green Street--a request for help for a full-time student and work study.

The Road Forward: Next Steps with the DRA Grant
Dr. Kris Williams

Back in December 2014, thanks to HCC, Union and Webster Counties received a Delta Regional Authority grant for almost $100,000 to help reimagine the region's workforce. The work is focused on achieving Work Ready Community status in each county, as well as looking at ways to strengthen the pathways and partnerships between K-12, higher ed and business/industry, and re-skilling or up-skilling unemployed, underemployed, and under-skilled workers. The grant allows both counties--along with Henderson County--to work with national consulting group Jobs for the Future (JFF) on developing a strategic plan to strengthen the regional workforce.

During the planning process, representatives from all three counties were interviewed by JFF staff and labor/workforce data was analyzed. Last April, stakeholders from the region, including the division chairs, administrators, and others from HCC, met to advise JFF on next steps. JFF staff then developed a framework for the strategic planning process that resulted in a series of recommendations, The Road Forward.

Please review the document, The Road Forward, which is housed on SharePoint. The recommendations and best practices suggested will help direct our strategic planning as we move forward. About 25 pages include recommendations, best practices and national models--the rest of the report includes valuable local data.

The stakeholder group of business and industry, government, and education will meet again in October to prioritize the recommendations and move the plan forward.
