President's Perspective

Dr. Kris Williams

Zack Sullivan's obituary was in the Gleaner last Friday; I attended his funeral on Monday. The family asked for donations to the Humane Society of Henderson County in his honor and the College Foundation sent a contribution on behalf of HCC's faculty and staff.

GED Graduation:

25 students earned their GED this past year and several students and their families attended a GED graduation for both Henderson and Union County programs held last night. These students put in so much effort--and the rigor and effort needed with the new test is very challenging. Several of these students are on their way to HCC to continue their education. Congratulations to all our GED recipients--and the faculty and staff who support them in their learning.

Nursing Open House: Many thanks to Dr. Tammy Owen, Doris Lake, Paul Kasenow, Denise Sutton, Dana Walker and others who supported the Nursing Open House last night. HCC faculty and staff showed off the simulation lab and spoke with individuals who are interested in teaching for the college. We also had advisors from USI, MSU, WKU, and U of E available to advise nurses on the BSN, MSN, and DNP programs.

Career Craze - Henderson: HCC Workforce Solutions hosted a week of learning and fun for tri-state middle school students. This free camp included a visit to Colonial Assisted Living, a CPR demonstration and a visit from Brad Ayer of the Henderson City-County Ambulance Service. More photos on Facebook.

Instant Admissions Day: Wednesday, July 1, is the next Instant Admissions Day for new students. Potential students can be admitted, completed testing and orientation, and apply for financial aid. Please remind interested folks that they can come to the Start Center between 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

College is not a commodity: interesting article in the  Washington Post on the need for students to put effort into their college experiences.

Welding Building Moves Forward

An updated look at construction of the new welding building as of June 12th. The new facility will increase the numbers of students served and allow the college to pursue becoming an American Welding Society (AWS) Accredited Test Facility.

The new welding building is a $1.4 million project with 20 welding stations and a technology-enabled classroom. The new facility replaces an older 12-station setting in downtown Henderson. The new building and larger number of welding booths available will increase credit, non-credit and corporate training opportunities. The location on campus will make it easier for students/ apprentices to attend welding and blueprint reading classes, allowing access to other classes scheduled around the welding classes.
