April 2 | 6:30 pm

STC310

Jack Walsh (Robert De Niro) is a bounty hunter searching for Mafia accountant, Jonathan Mardukas (Charles Grodin). To get his fee, Walsh must find Mardukas in New York and deliver him to Los Angeles. The problem is that Mardukas is also being hunted by the FBI, Mafia hit men, and other bounty hunters. Along the way, Walsh and Mardukas become friends, as well as targets. A buddy movie with great action and constant humor, this film showcases a great cast. (1988; 127 minutes; directed by Martin Brest and starring Robert De Niro, Charles Grodin, Dennis Farina and Yaphet Kotto.) Discussion led by Bill Dixon.

The Fox on the Fairway

Tickets are now available for The Fox on the Fairway, a Ken Ludwig farce that Henderson Community Theatre will present on April 10 and 11 at 7 p.m. at the Henderson Fine Arts CenterTickets are available in advance for $10 at the HFAC Box Office or by phoning 270-831-9800 for $10 (fee included) and online at hendersonfac.com for $10 (plus an online charge). Tickets will also be available for $10 at the door before each performance--cash or check only.

The cast includes new as well as long-time members of HCT. After an absence of three years, Lara Walker Goldey (formerly Lara Culiver) returns to HCT to play the role of Pamela Peabody, a sexy and oft-married member of the Quail Valley Country Club. Frank Furbush, a long-time HCT performer, plays Henry Bingham, manager of that country club, who has staked his wife's beloved antique store in a bet with rival country club manager Dickie Bell, Pamela's ex-husband. Bell is played by HCT regular Walt Dickinson while Henry's manly wife, Muriel, is played by Mary Minnette, former HCHS drama teacher. New to HCT but not new to the stage, Leland Morrow plays Justin Hicks, newly employed at Quail Valley and newly engaged to Louise Heindbedder, played by HCHS student Allyson Elliott, appearing in her third show with HCT.

William Starks provides the voice of the Starter.

This mildly risqu modern farce, in the tradition of 1930s screwball comedies, may not be suitable for children.  However, even non-duffers should find humor in this motley group of characters.

President's Perspective

Dr. Kris Williams

#HCCAppreciates: April is Community College Month! In celebration, HCC is thanking the community for their support in a number of ways. A calendar of HCC April events will be printed in our four local newspapers. A Facebook photo treasure hunt of campus will take place with prizes for the winners. You can thank your students, your advisory board members and others who support HCC by taking a selfie with the person (or a photo of the person) and either tweeting it to #HCCAppreciates or emailing it to Janet Jackson or Kim Conley to post on Facebook.

LT Meeting: The Leadership Team met on Monday and reviewed budget requests from Academics, Student Services, Transfer Committee, Business Services and the IR/IE Office. Presentations will be posted with the meeting minutes on the Henderson Transformation Team website. Ideas from across the college to increase revenue and decrease expense were shared; final decisions will be made within the next three weeks. Brian McMurtry presented a recommendation from the Lean Committee on better ways to handle employee off-boarding (i.e., when an employee leaves the college). The LT accepted the recommendation, which includes a series of steps for HCC to take. If you have any questions about the meeting, please see your LT representative or any LT member.

BeCause: The Campus For A Cause 5K Run/Walk was held Saturday at HCC. It was a scenic (and chilly) run/fun walk around the HCC campus to benefit Partners in Health, a charity treating victims of Ebola in West Africa. Campus for a Cause 5K was formed in the Fall of 2014 when a current nursing student, Laura Katter, wanted to do something to help fight the Ebola epidemic. She organized a group of students and staff to hold the 1st Annual Campus for a Cause 5K Run/Walk. The student committee members are Jonie Barrett, Amanda Gugel, Benjamin Junkerman, Laura Katter, Janeth Marquez, Ashly Skaggs, and Robin Roach. The faculty advisor was Dr. Carole Mattingly and staff advisor was Lindsey Greer. It was very successful with over 35 participants and a number of paid sponsorships. Congratulations to these students and advisors for their hard work--and for developing a fundraiser that could be taken on each year by student groups! Photo of some of the committee and participants by Janet Jackson.

May 11: The New HCC Smokeout begins May 11. As of 12:01 a.m. on 5/11, there will be no smoking, e-cigarette use, or any other tobacco products used anywhere on campus except in private vehicles. Individuals who use any tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, may smoke or chew in their cars as long as no smoke, ash or butts escape from the car. If maintenance staff find ashtrays or cigarette butts dumped in parking lots or on campus then HCC reserves the right to ban use anywhere on campus.

College Closed: A reminder that HCC closes at noon this Friday,
April 3. Hope you have a wonderful holiday!

computer-mouse-abstract.jpg Online Parent College Advising Training

A new online program called Take the LEAD helps Kentucky parents and community members support their middle and high school students in getting ready for college and a career. The program is free and on-demand so that participants can earn their Local Education Advocate Diploma on their own schedule.

Developed by GEAR UP Kentucky specifically for at-risk and underserved families, Take the LEAD provides research-based coursework to help parents advise their children on their plans after high school. Participants learn about the importance of being involved in their child's education, how to interpret standardized test scores and use online tools to keep track of their child's academic progress, the different ways to pay for college, and how to navigate the college admissions process.

Topics are organized into three levels so parents can get the information relevant to their student's grade level: Middle School (seventh and eighth grade), High School (ninth and 10th grade), and College & Career Savvy (11th and 12th grade - available in Summer 2015). Content is presented in "bite-size pieces," 5-10 minute segments, with each course taking approximately 20-45 minutes to complete. Participants may choose to try just one, a handful, or complete all the core courses to earn a Local Education Advocate Diploma in any of the three levels.

GEAR UP Kentucky also offers a toolkit for schools and organizations interested in offering the Take the LEAD program in their local community. The online toolkit includes resources for promoting and implementing the program and can be accessed at http://www.taketheleadky.com/statewide/.
