Happy Holidays from the HCC Faculty and Staff

HCC will BuildSmart

As part of the HCC community, you have experienced the development of a beautiful campus--a campus that has grown and changed to meet community needs and new technologies. Unfortunately, it is also a campus that has aged and which has buildings that are not able to handle new needs. HCC has an opportunity through the statewide KCTCS BuildSmart Initiative to invest in campus classrooms and infrastructure--renovations that leave a lasting legacy for the students of tomorrow.

Through the BuildSmart Initiative, HCC will realize $5 million to make needed renovations such as replacing or adding elevators, improving classrooms and student space, renovating or adding bathrooms, fixing sidewalks and more. These are major renovations that cannot occur if this funding isn't generated.

BuildSmart is funded through $3.75 million in agency bonds and $1.25 million raised locally. That's where your participation is vital! This is a 3:1 match towards your investment in our community's higher education-our student's options for careers and jobs. Please contact Susanne Wilson (Advancement Office, 270.831.9804) or Dr. Kris Williams (President's Office, 270.860.8935) to discuss your donation to the future of HCC today! Your support is very appreciated by all of HCC.

December Graduation 2014

Pomp and Circumstance played as Professor Tony Strawn carried the mace and led in forty students who "walked" to get their degree, diploma, and/or certificate. The students enjoyed a Commence-ment Address by Mr. Jeffrey Barton, director of the Earle C. Clements Job Corps Academy--and the Honor Guard from the Academy carried in the Colors.

Four nursing students were honored with special awards, and HCC's Phi Theta Kappa graduates (national community college honor society) were recognized. (The photo above is of Nursing degree graduates). 159 fall 2014 graduates and 17 summer 2014 graduates were invited to participate in the ceremony.

The HCC Board of Directors awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award to Dr. Craig Beaven, who graduated from HCC in 1997 and went on to get his Bachelor's degree from the University of Kentucky, his Master's degree from Virginia Commonwealth University, and his Ph.D. from the University of Houston. He has published over 40 poems and many other articles and has been a finalist for many awards. He is currently teaching English at Tallahassee Community College, FL. His parents, Dick and Sheila Beaven, accepted the award on his behalf (photo, right, with Professor Tony Strawn and Dr. Williams). Both photos by John Merrill.

New Horizons Winners 2014

Each year HCC awards New Horizons Awards to one faculty, administrative staff, and staff member from the college. Nominations are collected from HCC faculty and staff and the winner is selected based on transformative and innovative practices. Winners compete at the state KCTCS level in their category.

Doris Cherry, Professor of Reading (left), was honored with the Faculty New Horizons Award for her new and innovative techniques to support students, particularly those taking transitional courses. She has served on numerous committees dedicated to this mission at the college and system level. She is a valued member of the Kentucky Association for Developmental Education as a board member and has been honored as their Outstanding Educator. She regularly is called upon to give input related to developmental education at the statewide level. She is a transformational faculty leader.

Cary Conley, Director of Academic Advising and Assessment (middle), was awarded the HCC new Horizons Administrative Staff Award for cultivating diversity, multiculturalism, and inclusion across the campus. His work on the HCC Developmental Education committee and on the Transfer Focus has grown efforts in these two areas.

Sherri Williams, Lead Custodian (right), was honored with the HCC New Horizons Staff award for her dedication, engagement across the campus, her focus on student access and success through maintenance of the physical plant, and her pride in the work she and the custodial staff accomplish.

Hanging of the Mittens

Each year HCC gathers mittens, gloves, scarves and hats to distribute to children that are in need so they will be warm during the winter months. Our tree is now complete and many, many gloves, caps and mufflers have gone to various organizations in town to keep children and young folks warm and toasty. The photo, by Bill Dixon, is of HCC student Diane Houston, who handmade several hats for the Mitten Tree. Diane graduated last Friday night and we are proud to have been part of her education!

Registrar Brenda Knight Retires

Brenda Knight joined HCC 27.5 years ago as a work/study student and has held many positions at the college, culminating in the Registrar position (over Records and Admissions). Along the way she completed her Bachelor's and Master's degrees and is almost finished with her doctoral program. As Brenda retires from HCC, she is moving with her husband, Brad, to Tallahassee, Florida.
