President's Perspective

Dr. Kris Williams

Enrollment Needed!: We need to enroll 700 new or returning students for the spring term! Two events will take place on campus next week to support this effort:

  • Instant Admissions Day: Students can be fully admitted on Monday, December 15. They can arrive between 8 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. in the STC Start Center and be admitted, tested, oriented, apply for financial aid, and advised at one event. This is an initiative by Start Center staff and others and is very appreciated!

  • Advising Day: Faculty advisors are scheduled to be available for currently enrolled students on Tuesday, December 16, from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Faculty will be located in STC 202 (Math Lab) so students can use the computers there or in the Start Center. Currently, faculty will work in two hour shifts beginning at 8 a.m. There will be approximately 4-6 advisors available during every 2 hour window. (Many thanks to these faculty for their support of this effort!)

SACSCOC: Kudos to Tony Strawn who presented a great session on development of the QEP at the annual SACSCOC conference on Monday. While many QEP sessions focus on specifics, Tony's is recognized for its delivery of strategies across the QEP process.

United Way Campaign: HCC had 33 donors contribute/pledge

$6,136.19 to United Way! A random drawing was held in the Business Office and parking spaces were awarded to Janet Jackson and Bridget Murray. Other goodies were awarded to Keith Sayles, Carole Mattingly, Connie Phillips, Tony Strawn, Toni Windhaus, Cathy Hunt, and Frank Furbush. Thanks to all who supported this worthy cause!

KYAE on Parade: Our Adult Ed staff and supporters marched in the Henderson Christmas Parade over the weekend. It was cold but they persevered and brought attention to this important program!

End-of-Term Celebration: Join your colleagues for a potluck celebration on Friday, December 12th at 11:30 a.m. in the Stagg Room.  Please RSVP today (Dec 10) via the Outlook invitation from Malinda Hudson. Potluck items may be delivered anytime after 10 a.m. New Horizons Awards will be presented at this event and the Annual Events Committee will be contributing to the holiday spirit.

HCC Holiday Buffet/Ornament Exchange: You have until Monday, December 15th to pay $5 and partake of the Holiday Buffet on Wednesday, December 17th at 11:30 a.m. in the Grill. Check your Outlook invitation for details or contact Malinda Hudson.

Graduation!: Can't believe it is already time for our December graduation ceremonies. Please consider parking behind the Sullivan Technology Center or in the upper lot by the Admin Building if you are able to so we can free up room for graduates and their families outside the HFAC.

Stop the Germs!

Both respiratory and tummy troubles are going around the community right now, and the stress of end of the term doesn't help. Here are a few practical steps you can take to help keep well:

  • Wipe down keyboards, mice and phones with Clorox wipes every once in a while--and wipe off your door knobs while you are at it!
  • Cough or sneeze into a tissue that is then quickly discarded or cover your mouth with your elbow.
  • Find alternatives to shaking hands such as fist-bumping.
  • Wash your hands often (preferably for 20 seconds or so--and cleaning under your nails--and keep from touching fingers to eyes.
  • Try to manage your time to stay well rested, get some exercise every day, and eat healthy meals.
