Mock Active Shooter Drill a Success
Henderson Community College held a mock active shooter drill with the Henderson Police on November 21. Sergeant Jeff Welch met with faculty and staff in the Sandy Watkins Lab and discussed how to move to safety in classrooms and offices, and how to attempt safety in large open spaces in case of a shooter in a building. Two drills were then held on the second floor of the Sullivan Technology Center, with faculty and staff located in classrooms and in the Start Center. Three young actors ran through the hallways and into target areas shooting blanks while police officers checked to be sure doors were locked and individuals were out of line-of-sight. The actors were apprehended in classrooms and hallways. Several HCC personnel added to the fray by screaming, running towards officers, or pretending to be hurt or dead in hallways. It was a very useful exercise. We will continue lockdown drills at HCC with our students, faculty and staff in the hopes that violence will never occur on campus--but with the knowledge that we need to be as prepared as possible if it does. Channel 14 News and The Gleaner covered the event. I am grateful to Chief Stauffer and his officers for their help in this professional development for faculty and staff.

Workforce Solutions for your Company
When training models fire on all 8 cylinders, it is usually the result of a tune up. Henderson Water Utility (HWU) and Workforce Solutions are developing a training partnership to reinforce skill sets within the ranks of their maintenance personnel. The effort of this collaboration between industry and academia are yielding synergistic results not typically experienced by traditional training plans. From conception, design and implementation, this program has been a collaboration of effort between HWU management and HCC staff. This joint partnership in training does not end with collaboration concerning curriculum development. The course consists of both HCC and HWU's custom built training aides. The course utilizes various Amatrol(c) training stands and computer-aided instruction ranging from Blackboard to ANSI regulated training to HWU- provided training platforms allowing students to complete various electrical circuits routinely encountered in the course of performing job specific duties.
A one-size-fits-all model of training does not work for every organization, nor does it have to. This joint partnership of industry and academia to execute instructional delivery is the hallmark of Workforce Solutions and can be tailored to address specific skill divisions experienced by your company. Could your employees benefit from a custom tuned training plan? Contact Joe Milazzo in Workforce Solutions today at joe.milazzo@kctcs.edu or 270-831-9780 to explore which options may be right for your organization. (Article written by Joe Milazzo.)

Disruptive Technologies Conference
Kudos to HCC faculty members Barry Phelps and Brian Joy for hosting the Disruptive Technologies Conference on Friday, November 21. This all-day conference was primarily for high school students and focused on the ways that new innovations shake up existing product lines or create a brand-new industry (think the typewriter and the computer). Barry notes, "These conferences give our programs the opportunity to build relationships with the IT and Business Students at [the] High School... to promote and recruit enrollment in our Programs.... and to build better working relationships between us and the High School. Conferences like this also give the high school students the opportunity to attend conferences related to their area of study. And, this is also a great way for our college to serve our local community."
I agree! And I want to join Barry and Brian in thanking a multitude of folks across campus who helped make the event a success.
