Honoring Dr. Michael McCall for his Service

HCC hosted the September KCTCS Board of Regents meeting on campus. This meeting was KCTCS President Dr. Michael B. McCall's last time on campus as he retires in January, 2015. HCC held a reception for the Board, HCC's Board of Directors and College Foundation Board, and faculty and staff. The reception featured Body Maps; art created by organ transplant recipients sharing their feelings about the donation and their donors. Mrs. Caroline McCall's (photo, left) Body Map was highlighted. Foundation President and HCC Board member John Wilkey welcomed the Regents. During the reception, Dr. McCall was presented with a joint proclamation from the City of Henderson and County of Henderson honoring his service to the state and HCC. It was presented by City Commissioner and Mayor Pro-Tem Jan Hite, a previous Board of Regents student regent.

SACSCOC Team Visits Herron

An accrediting review committee from SACS Commission on Colleges recently visited the Herron Center site in Morganfield. They were reviewing a change allowing HCC to offer more than 50% of a credential onsite. The committee was very impressed by the community support of the facility and its diverse use by the high school, Adult Education, along with the academic/technical coursework offered. Union County Schools and Methodist Hospital are especially strong partners. Recently HCC began offering the Medicaid Nurse Aide course at the Herron Center. Kudos on a very successful visit to Academic Coordinator Shannon Clements, Student Services Assistant Rebecca Snyder, Maintenance Worker Demetrius Griffin, and Director of Nursing Dr. Tammy Owen.

Honors Program Visits Roundtable

Five HCC Honors students, along with HCC Professors Sharon Burton, Dr. David Fritts, and Paul Kasenow, attended the Kentucky Honors Roundtable Conference at WKU last weekend. They listened to a number of presentations from Honors students around the Commonwealth. I enjoyed meeting with the HCC Honors Students and their professors at a follow-up brown-bag lunch. I am proud of the Honors Program and invite you to contact Sharon Burton with nominations for students to join the program.

Student Nurses Highlight Breast Cancer Awareness

Two of our fourth semester nursing students, Ashley Durham and Cori Wilke, created the Student Engagement bulletin board located on the third floor of the Sullivan Technology Center Building. The board highlights Breast Cancer Awareness and will be on display the month of October. HCC's Nursing Program was the first Associate Degree in Nursing program in Kentucky. The first graduating class celebrates its 50th anniversary in May. Photo by John Merrill.
