Hispanic Heritage Month

Join HCC in a celebration of Music & Culture on Monday, October 27th at 12:30 in Joe's Place.

Dancers include Ezequiel Campos from the State of Aguascalientes in Mexico who studies English and Math at the HCC Adult Learning Center and is a manager at Los Bravos Restaurant. Also, Evelia Mata from the State of Jalisco in Mexico who co-owns one of the Los Bravos Restaurants in Evansville, Indiana.

 ASTRA Update

The new version of Astra is experiencing some hiccups. Success is more likely if you use Firefox. Also, the KCTCS credentials may have to be keyed up to five times before they are accepted. If after two attempts you are not successful with your entries, please email Malinda the details regarding your request and she will get them entered.

Your patience with these ongoing trials is greatly appreciated!

Duncan's Grill

Thursday's special is spaghetti and garlic bread for $5.49; add tossed salad for $1.

Bookstore Textbook Adoptions

Textbook adoptions are due October 9 for the Spring 2015 term. Go to "Adopt" here and add your adoption electronically. If you are the department chair, and know what your adjuncts are using, please also include their sections when adopting.

Play it Again, Santa! xmas-figurines.jpg

As you leave for Fall Break, RFL School of Rock would like to remind you about the Play it Again Santa sale the week prior to Thanksgiving week.  Fall break could be a great opportunity to look through your Christmas decorations and share some of the nice, slightly used items for our sale.  The Students as well as employees look forward to shopping.  Your help will make this a successful fundraiser for Relay for Life.  We will also be accepting slightly used toys.  This is the part that our students really enjoy.  The toys need to look new and if you donate stuffed animals they need to be cleaned or washed prior to bringing them in. Thanks so much for your continued support and watch for the sale

November 12, 13 & 14th.

President's Perspective
Dr. Kris Williams, President

LT Meeting: The Leadership Team met on Monday. The LT heard about Governor Beshear's KentuckyHealthNow initiative regarding tobacco-free properties and healthy food options (more on this in next week's Green Street), reviewed current student loan default rates in KCTCS, and discussed the statewide dual credit workgroup and work of the Distance Education/eLearning Strategic Plan Ad-Hoc Team. The new interactive KCTCS Fact Books webpage was shared. Mike Thurman gave an update on newly-available CCSSE data. Paul Kasenow gave an update on the Quality Assurance process for online classes. The LT approved the assignment of FoE Transfer and First Year Focus action items to appropriate HCC committees, including the new Transfer Committee. Tony Strawn reported on QEP progress including the second-tier advising syllabus. The need to strengthen evaluation of student learning outcomes, review findings through eLumen, and then close the circle by using the findings to improve curriculum was discussed. Paul Kasenow and the Division Chairs will lead this latter process. Meeting minutes will be available soon in SharePoint > Henderson Transformation Team.

Kudos: Dr. Ashley Holland presented at the KATE (Kentucky Association of Teacher Educators) annual conference as part of a panel discussion on Quality Collaborations focused on three areas: collaboration with community colleges to recruit teacher candidates, outreach to local schools and community agencies to build community-university partnerships, and presentations of PRAXIS prep sessions.

Delta Region Workforce: I attend the Reimagining the Delta Workforce Summit yesterday. The Delta Regional Authority states, "Through an investment of $1.7 million into a technical assistance and capacity building program for communities and eight state-specific summits held across the region, the DRA is helping to bring leadership from government, business & industry, education to take real steps towards building a pipeline of skilled workers to meet the demand of the globally competitive labor market." The linked report,  Reimagining Workforce Development, challenges higher education providers to bring new opportunities to the table.

Top Tier: One of our College Foundation Board members, a proud HCC alum, sent a link to this article, "Why Even Top Tier Students Should Consider Community Colleges." While the article is flattering we still have work to do with public perceptions of our quality.

League: The October League Connections is available. It features a report on Community College Voices in the National Completion Agenda.

Lean Enterprise Update - REFINE

Stacey Howell

HCC'S Blue Ribbon Lean Enterprise Committee is committed to eliminating wasteful processes, improving quality, and reducing cost for Henderson Community College. As the Committee enters its third year, a framework for refinement of college processes has been implemented. The framework, named REFINE, is designed to improve something by making small changes.

This fourfold framework calls for Renewing the classroom by creating Lean learning environments, Finding improvements in Student Services, Nullifying wasteful practices in our institution, and Examining results of prior and ongoing projects for continued improvement.

The Lean committee is always accepting ideas, input, and suggestions for possible projects to REFINE our service to our campus community. To submit an idea, visit our Lean Enterprise Suggestion Box. If you would like more information about Lean Enterprise at HCC, contact Brian McMurtry or Michelle Chappell.

Book Sale Benefits History Club

Mike Knecht

The library is holding a book sale for the remainder of the fall semester with all generated funds going to the HCC History Club. The sale is taking place in the library's foyer, and will continue until the end of the semester. A fresh batch of books will be displayed every two weeks with videos (VHS tapes) available beginning October 15. Each title is $.25. The library's intent is to help a student organization while contributing less material to the local recycling center.
