Management Tip for Success

Time to put your mind on a technology diet?  We are constantly interrupted by alerts, alarms, beeps, and buzzes that tell us some new information.  We pull out our phones at work, while driving, school, during meals and even when engaged in a conversation with another person.  There is increasing evidence suggesting these disruptions make it difficult to do our best work, diminish our productivity and contribute to a feeling of overwhelm. So what can we do?

  • Recognize the issue. Awareness is rarely sufficient to drive change but it's always the first step.  How many times a day do you check your phone, scan various feeds, or view social networking sites?  Once your concentration has been broken, how long does it take to get back to your original task?
  • See the tools around us and exert some control over them. These interruptions are deliberately provoked by the designers of the tools we use.  What tools are you using? What alarms and features might you disable? What limits might you place on the "convenient" features?
  • Manage our emotions and cultivate our capacity for mindfulness. No technical interventions will be enough unless we're also willing to work on ourselves.  Emotions are at the heart of this dynamic - the excitement and anxiety generated by new information are the fuel that drives us to interrupt ourselves over and over again.  There is no quick fix for emotional management but there are steps we can take: physical activity, adequate sleep, journaling, and meditation has shown to have a powerful impact.

Remember we rule the tools, we are not ruled by them.

Today's management tip was adapted from "The Marshmallow Test for Grownups" by Ed Batista-which was published by The Harvard Business Review. For the full post, see: http://blogs.hbr.org/2014/09/the-marshmallow-test-for-grownups/

Whether you're a current or prospective partner, we hope you'll use this newsletter as a tool to help meet your company's training goals. We look forward to working with you!
