President's Perspective
Dr. Kris Williams, President

WKU: President Gary Ransdell talked transfer with students yesterday in Joe's Place during the ENGAGE period and gave away a $500 scholarship to one lucky recipient. He and several others from WKU then met with the Leadership Team to discuss HCC transfer opportunities. WKU has a joint admission agreement with HCC; students benefit by having access to all WKU student services, including transfer advising and free athletics tickets. Contact Lorie Maltby for more information.

LT Meeting: The Leadership Team met on Monday, 9/8. Mike Thurman provided an update on available DSS screens and how to access them. Tony Strawn reported that the FoE Transfer Focus and First Year Focus outcomes are being assigned to existing college teams; this also necessitates creation of a Transfer Team. Outcomes will be emailed to current committee chairs. Bill Dixon reported on work being done by the Bridging the Achievement Gap committee. Keith Sayles brought forward a new student organization which was approved, the HCC Visual Arts Club, faculty advisor Cathi Blackburn. Guest presenter Chris Alexander, Assistant Project Director of Title III Funding at OCTC, presented on that college's Online Evaluation of Instruction process. Minutes will be available on the Henderson Transformation Team SharePoint site > Leadership Team.

Tours: The Campus has been covered up with fifth- and eighth-graders from North Middle School with many more tours to come. I really appreciate the support these tours have on campus from faculty, staff and current HCC students. This photo is by John Merrill; you can find more on the HCC Facebook page.

BuildSmart Campaign Update: I appreciate the donations coming in from faculty and staff for BuildSmart. Campaign letters are being finalized to go to adjunct faculty soon. If you have questions about how to donate, please contact Susanne Wilson or Stacey Howell.

Supporting Men of Color: The Minority Male Community College Collaborative (M2C3) will be hosting a free webinar titled, "Supporting Men of Color in the Community Colleges: Teaching and Learning Strategies for Classroom Faculty". The webinar will be held this Friday, September 12, 2014 from 10 to 11 a.m. Pacific Time. Click to register for the free webinar.

Introducing the Little Free Library

Mike Knecht, Director of Library Services

One of the best ways to enjoy a good book is to share it with others. Whether you're reading to a family member, participating in a club, or donating to a non-profit organization, sharing a book is a feel-good act that benefits the donor and the next reader. HCC supports the sharing of books through its campus library and a new service called, "the Little Free Library."  Located in the Cyber Caf on the ground floor of the STC building, HCC's new Little Free Library can be found on a bookshelf located along the wall adjacent to the vending machines. Students, faculty and staff are welcome to take the books home to read and share with their family members. They are also encouraged to return the book and/or a similar book as a replacement whenever they wish. The intent is to make good books more accessible to the campus without restrictions, promote the sharing of knowledge, and encourage others to create their own Little Free Library. For more information about this service, please contact the HCC's library staff or send an email to [email protected].

Fall Film Series

Kevin Reid, Librarian

weathered-movie-reel.jpgHCC presents the Fall 2014 Film Series, In Memoriam: Classic Films of Great Actors Who Died in 2014. Films will be shown in Room STC 310 at 6:30 p.m.; admission and popcorn are free.

The Little Colonel, Monday, September 15

One of Shirley Temple's most beloved films, The Little Colonel is the story of a little girl whose mother is a Confederate Belle who married a Yankee soldier.  When the mother is disowned by her father-a Confederate Colonel-only Shirley Temple's goodness and innocence can bring the family back together.   (Directed by David Butler; starring Shirley Temple, Lionel Barrymore, Hattie McDaniel and Bill "Bojangles" Robinson; 1935, black & white, 81 min.)  Discussion led by Katie Griffis.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, Monday, September 29

This is the best known and most popular of Sergio Leone's "spaghetti westerns."  Recently deceased Eli Wallach portrays "The Ugly"-a gunfighter who with Clint Eastwood ("The Good") and Lee Van Cleef ("The Bad")-are all searching for a stolen payroll.  The scenes and sounds of this western have become iconic.  (Directed by Sergio Leone; starring Eli Wallach, Clint Eastwood and Lee Van Cleef; 1966, 161 min.)  Discussion led by Cary Conley.

Good Will Hunting, Monday, October 20

Robin Williams won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in this film, while Matt Damon and Ben Affleck won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.  Williams is compelling as the acerbic, yet insightful psychiatrist who is struggling to teach the brilliant yet socially awkward janitor working in the halls of MIT how to find his way in the world.  This story of egos, brilliance, love and redemption garnered nine Oscar nominations.  (Directed by Gus Van Sant; starring Robin Williams, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Minnie Driver and Stellan Skarsgard; 1997, 126 min.)  Discussion led by Kevin Reid

Key Largo,  Monday, November 3

Lauren Bacall collaborated with Humphrey Bogart on three films.  Of these, Key Largo is the starkest and most suspenseful.  When Bogart visits a remote hotel in the Florida Keys, he finds that its owners, Bacall and her invalid father, are under the thumb of a Chicago gangster--modelled on Al Capone--who is hiding from the police.  Isolated, and with a hurricane blowing in, Bogart and Bacall must face down the gangster and his crew.  (Directed by John Huston; starring Lauren Bacall, Humphrey Bogart, Edward G. Robinson, Lionel Barrymore and Claire Trevor; 1948, 100 min.)  Discussion led by Steve McCarty.
