The Board generously approved a college support budget that will help with faculty and staff professional development; support student engagement activities and clubs such as the Academic Team and Phi Theta Kappa; and help the Film Series continue. The Board is a committed group of community leaders who volunteer their time, effort and resources to support our students and college community. You are also served on this board by Bill Gary (faculty), Jacque Conn (staff) and SGA president Ebenezer Yankey.

Three Active Learning Strategies: (That Push Students Beyond Memorization). "Those who teach in the health disciplines expect their students to retain and apply every iota of learned material. However, many students come to us having achieved academic success by memorizing the content, regurgitating that information onto an exam, and promptly forgetting a good portion of it. In health, as well as other disciplines where new material builds upon the material from the previous semesters, it is critical for students to retain what they learn throughout their coursework and as they begin their careers as a nurse, engineer, elementary teacher, etc." See the rest of the article from Faculty Focus.

Governor's Minority Student College Preparation Program

The Governor's Minority Student College Preparation Program / Summer Enrichment Experience Program was established to assist in addressing the issues of attrition, lower GPA's and undecided majors experienced by minority students according to grant research. The involvement of KCTCS will address these issues by offering academic enrichment activities (Math, Reading, Computer Science, Technical information, and Multi-cultural Education) as tools to encourage students to remain in school and ultimately enroll in college.

The Summer Enrichment Program has 3 main objectives: (1) to provide academic enrichment activities for middle and junior high school (grades 6-8), minority students and encourage them to stay in school and enter college; (2) make young minority students aware of the benefits and value of college and consider college as an achievable option; and (3) prepare these students to be successful in college level work and persist to college graduation.

HCC's participants met at the college and then enjoyed a program hosted by Eastern Kentucky University on June 25-26. The students attended hands on STEM Projects. CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) and Mystery Powders and Geometric Optics. The Summer Enrichment Program is funded by The Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education. Photos and information furnished by Lori McGuire. More photos may be found on the HCC Facebook page.
