HCC Film Series 4/17

Listed in the AFI "Top 100 American Films," this quintessential "screwball comedy" pairs an absent-minded professor with a flighty, yet loveable socialite. Accidents, a pet leopard, marital expectations and scientific research all get wrapped up in the madcap frenzy that is Hepburn's life. (Starring Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn, 1938, black & white, 103 min.) Presenter: Scott Taylor.

President's Perspective

Dr. Kris Williams

AACC Follow-up: The American Association of Community Colleges released its implementation guide to help community colleges focus on redesign and reinvention. The guide is the follow-up companion to the 21st-Century Commission Report. You can find the initial report, the implementation guide and additional resources online. The report recommended redesign in the following areas:

  • Increase completion rates by 50% by 2020
  • Dramatically improve college readiness
  • Close the American skills gap
  • Refocus the community college mission and redefine institutional roles
  • Invest in collaborative support structures
  • Target public and private investments strategically
  • Implement policies and practices that promote rigor and accountability

Phi Theta Kappa: HCC's Phi Kappa chapter of the national two-year college honor society PTK has been very active this year. Led by president Cheryl Higgens (left) and faculty advisors Paul Kasenow and Lorie Maltby, the student organization has hosted a well-attended statewide PTK conference, supported transfer-advising CollegeFish software for every student, hosted the Empty Bowls project and headed the Commit to Complete Challenge. The latter is a national project to get students to commit to complete their degree and help faculty and staff to support that commitment. This year the Phi Kappa chapter was notified that it reached 4-Star Status within the PTK's national rankings--the highest status the chapter has ever received! Congratulations to Paul, Lorie, and all our PTK members.

At 60%: Please help our students and HCC by reporting student attendance for the spring standard term today if you have not yet done so. Questions or concerns? Please contact Financial Aid Director Andy Zellers.

Women's History: The Diversity Learning Community presented guest speaker Dr. Diana Quevedo, Assistant Professor of Spanish at the University of Evansville (left). Dr. Guevedo spoke on Indigenous Women: Stories of Empowerment and Nonviolent Resistance in Columbia. There was a great article on the presentation in today's The Gleaner.

2014 NW Regional Job Fair: April 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Sandy Watkins Lab, STC. Help our students know about this great opportunity! They can meet local employers who are hiring. Attendees are encouraged to bring their resume. Breakout sessions will be presented by HCC Career Services and WorkKeys testing will be offered in the morning at a cost of $35. Please contact Angie Watson or x19671 for more information.

Crazy about Learning: Workforce Solutions is holding Career Craze this week for 6-8th graders,  focused on energy production, distribution, conservation and safety. The Camp is sponsored through the office of Lieutenant Governor Jerry Abramson and involves parents as well as students. Kudos to Rebecca Dale, Jo Ann Brock, Victoria Reed and Joe Milazzo for a great youth learning opportunity. Check out Facebook for more photos.

Promoting Persistence Through Comprehensive Supports: Jobs For the Future (JFF) developed this publication to support colleges and other institutions that are searching for strategies to better provide comprehensive supports to students. The goal of this paper is to provide clarity on what it means to provide comprehensive support services; share what research says about effective practice; and, provide some examples of cost-effective strategies that colleges are using to provide this high level of support. The report focuses on the barriers faced by underprepared learners, the supports they need, and the challenges to providing comprehensive supports.
