Professional Services: Above and Beyond
From time to time OCLS receives requests to provide custom programming or services that fall outside our mandate to equitably serve the needs of all the college libraries and that are not within the parameters of an existing opt-in service. To meet these special project requests without drawing on collective resources or sacrificing service delivery to the other libraries, OCLS is pleased to announce the addition of a Professional Services offering and accompanying Professional Services Fee Schedule to our suite of opt-in services.
Structured like the Opt-in Services Fee Schedule, the Professional Services Fee Schedule takes into account the internal resources, overhead, and any third-party costs that would be required to complete the project. By developing a Professional Service and Fee Schedule, OCLS ensures that:
- libraries can continue to request special services from OCLS;
- libraries requesting special services cover their costs;
- collective services and resources are not impacted;
- all libraries have the opportunity to benefit from new services;
- libraries receive equitable estimates and written proposals for specialized work.
Sharing the Cost
We anticipate that on occasion a special project request may offer opportunities or benefits to libraries beyond the requesting library. In these instances and with the requesting library's knowledge, we would offer all libraries the opportunity to participate. As with our Opt-In Service program, this has the benefit of sharing the proposed project or development costs across more libraries.
Do you have a project?
If you have a project that OCLS could help complete or you have other questions about our Professional Services offering, please contact: Alex Eykelhof, Director of Information Technology([email protected]), or Virginia Roy, Director of Services ([email protected]).

Open for Business - eResources Portal Launched
On November 1, 2012, over 50 eResources staff, library directors, library managers, and other interested staff received access to the newly released eResources portal. With links to licences, vendor contacts, information on current trials, and much more, the portal will rapidly become the go-to space for all things related to eResources and their management, and provides the opportunity for the college libraries to leverage their collective strength. In addition to gathering all the critical information in one place, the portal should help alleviate everyone's chronic problem of too much email. eResources portal users can customize their notifications to receive updates on new portal content instantly, daily, or weekly. Additionally, the eResources team will be sending once weekly digests compiling all the important information added to the portal. Now eResource staff will have much more control over what information they see and how often they see it. Everyone should have received their first weekly digest on Friday November 2. We'd love to get your feedback. Please email Coralee Leroux ([email protected]) with any comments, questions, or suggestions for the weekly digests or the eResources portal.

AODA Research Update and Introductory Webinars
Last spring, HLLR charged the AODA research panel with the task of helping the college libraries understand the operational and financial impact of implementing the Communications and Information Standards (in particular Section 18, Subsections 1, 2, and 3 pertaining to Education Libraries) of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act. Accordingly, the AODA research panel worked diligently over the summer to engage a research consultant on behalf of the colleges and in September selected the Inclusive Design Research Centre of OCAD University and specifically Dr. Vera Roberts to conduct the colleges' AODA research project.
Dr. Roberts has been working with the panel since September to refine the work plan and prepare the schedule of deliverables - the first of which are two introductory webinars on library compliance with the Standard scheduled for November 29: one at 9:30-10:30am and the second from 1:30-2:30pm. Mark your calendars and plan to attend one of these important webinars, which are open to all library and college staff who may have a role or interest in AODA compliance in the library.
For more information on the progress of the AODA Research Panel contact the panel chair, Marian Traynor, [email protected]
