Dear friends and allies of the UC San Diego LGBT community~
Tomorrow, Wednesday, June 26th at 12 noon we invite you to gather at UC San Diego's LGBT Resource Center to reflect and discuss the implication of the Supreme Court's decision regarding California's Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). If you need a quick and handy infographic about the potential outcomes, please go to http://www.lambdalegal.org/blog/infographic-marriage-at-scotus.
The decision of the United States Supreme Court will be made public at approximately 7am PST tomorrow, Wednesday, June 26th. It will take some time to complete a quick analysis, and depending on the complexity and length of the information released, a few hours for initial opinions regarding the implications. However, by 12 noon PST we should have a good sense of what it all means, and it is important to be in community at times like this. There may be cause to celebrate, there may be cause to mourn, but inevitably there will be cause to come together, where our strength truly lies.
Many of us have been watching the Supreme Court closely. Yesterday's affirmative action decisions and today's announcement regarding the Voting Rights Act have broad implications which impact many in our LGBT community. We intersect along many important lines, although the media often portray our interests narrowly and related only to marriage equality. Some in our community experience more impacts of the last few decisions of the Supreme Court than the ones they will announce tomorrow regarding marriage equality. There are many in our community whose families and relationships are separated by borders, who struggle to access education and healthcare, who are still impacted by HIV/AIDS in overwhelming numbers, and who experience violence because of the way they express their gender and sexuality. The UC San Diego LGBT Resource Center has deep and intersecting connections to the UC San Diego Women's Center and UC San Diego Cross-Cultural Center. We name, know and live at the intersections, understanding the complexities and diversity of our community and honoring our journey.
Additionally, the broader San Diego LGBT community will gather Wednesday, June 26th at 5pm at the Rainbow Pride Flagpole in Hillcrest, at the corner of University Avenue and Normal Street. For more information, please go to https://www.facebook.com/events/256072917868062/. And then the community will gather at 7pm at the San Diego LGBT Community Center, located at the corner of University Avenue and Centre Street. Tomorrow is important. Join our community and its allies to discuss the implications and reflect on what it may mean. Tomorrow, Wednesday, June 26th at 12 noon at UC San Diego's LGBT Resource Center.
