Dear LGBT Resource Center community~
The LGBT Resource Center was burglarized at some point this past weekend, sometime after 4:45pm on Friday January 11th and before we discovered it this morning, January 13, 2013 at 7:45am. Three work laptop computers, a work video camera, and a set of work keys were taken. The Center was disheveled throughout, and many things had been gone through and moved.
We discovered the theft as we opened the Center today, Monday. We have filed a police report. There was no sign of forced entry, although some of the windows were ajar. The doors were locked and secured, and the perimeter alarm was set. It appears they might have climbed through a window.
Given that we had keys stolen, we will have the building re-keyed by the end of the day.
This crime appears to have been directed at our property, not at our LGBT community. The police informed us that in recent weeks there have been similar equipment thefts around campus, and other keys have been taken.
We wanted you to have this information as soon as possible. This appears to be a crime against our property, not against our LGBT Resource Center and its community. It is disturbing, and certainly has an impact. We all can heighten our awareness regarding our own safety, our community's safety, and the safety of our property.
If you see or hear anything unusual in or around our space, especially late at night or at unusual times, please call the campus police at 858 534-4357, or 911, and report it. Talk to any of the staff when something doesn't feel right.
Our Center will be open as we always are. Let's empower ourselves to be more safety conscious.
If you have any questions or need more information, please do not hesitate to contact me in the office, 858 822-3493. We will communicate to everyone more information as we move forward.
