"We cannot allow our fear of anger to deflect us nor seduce us into settling for anything less than the hard work of excavating honesty; we must be quite serious about the choice of this topic and the angers entwined within it because, rest assured, our opponents are quite serious about their hatred of us and of what we are trying to do here."

-- Audre Lorde

Pride and Pizza Work Party

July 20 | 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

LGBT Resource Center

Please come out to the Pride and Pizza Work Party. There you can pick up your free parade t-shirt, eat free pizza and snacks, and help to make the signs that we will be marching with for the parade. Also, we will be personalizing our parade t-shirts. The front of the t-shirts will ask: what are you proud of? The back of the t-shirts will respond: community, solidarity, and resistance. The best part is that there are 2 spaces for you to fill in your own response. So start thinking now about what bold statements you want to make in regards to pride.

The Pride and Pizza Work Party is where we really pull things together for the parade. We can't do it without you so please come out, show your support and bring a friend! For more information, please email Michelle Strange at mdstrange@ucsd.edu.

Graduate Student Highlight

Your Space

Welcome graduate students to the UC San Diego LGBT Resource Center. Our Center serves all constituents of the UC San Diego community, including and especially our graduate students. Our space is open to all constituents, although we know from our statistics that the majority of the folks who use our space on a daily basis are undergraduate students. However, our second largest category is graduate students, so we encourage you to make the Resource Center your own.

LGBT RCGrad students: this space is yours! Please use the LGBT Resource Center to hold your office hours and small seminar classes. You can fill out a room reservation form here. Our conference room provides a great study space for many graduate student study groups, presentations, and research based work. The Heritage Room is also a great space to work or take a nap after reading and grading. If you feel too isolated already by the summer's energy, hang out in the Family Room. Between the library, computers with free printing, and cozy couches, you are certain to find community at the LGBT Resource Center.

Celebration for HEI "Leader" Designation

July 13 | 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

West Arbor Drive, outside of UC San Diego Medical Center's main entrance

It is with great pride to announce that UC San Diego Health System has received the prestigious Healthcare Equality Index (HEI) "Leader" designation from the Human Rights Campaign. This designation could not have been received without the hard work of fantastic, culturally competent staff and those who are committed to inclusion and diversity.

The annual HEI surveys and rates respondents on their policies and practices related to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) patients and their families. It also serves as a unique benchmarking tool for identifying emerging best practices in LGBT patient-centered care. We are currently one of only two hospitals in the region to have exceeded the standards set by the Human Rights Campaign.

Please join our leadership, staff, local elected officials and LGBT community leaders for this fun event. A free beverage and giveaway will be provided to the first one hundred people who RSVP. RSVP to zwschlagel@ucsd.edu now through July 11.
