Colors of the rainbow!

THE RAINBOW WARRIOR

Andy comes to New Zealand every year and this year he came for the great hot baking days of summer in February.

He arrived at the shop and straight away walked passed the sun block and picked up a new light rain jacket.

He knew the hot February summer was not going to be what he had hoped for.

All the rivers were high and dirty so we had no choice but to head to the lakes and find some clear water.

We arrived and all was clear and calm ,the sun came out the rain subsided and Andy started to have a ball sight fishing for cruising trout.

For the first half of the day all the trout took the NZ Deadly cicada size 10 and the second half of the day we used a NZ grey mayfly nymph size 16 tied off a foot of light  rio fluro tippet off a NZ Deadly blowfly to fool them.

So if you are ever stuck in NZ for water to fish, think lakes, not rivers- find a lake with rainbows and become a rainbow warrior for a day - and remember give them no backing!!

Stu's Black and Olive NZ Deadly Hi-viz Cicadas on wide gape TMC hooks over 14 years from start to finish to prefect.

At last Deadly Black is in stock- limited stock !

Another discovery! Maybe!

The other day i was guiding and i was struggling to help my client get onto a fish, the trout were feeding and refusing everything , even with as far as we could make out well presented flies.
We had one fish that David must have cast to 20 times and i changed the flies and tippet at least 4 times.
Then i spotted a willow grub floating down amongst the leaves, just maybe this fish today are eating willow grubs floating down through the water column near the bottom!
So i tied on one of my floating foam willow grubs on a short piece of tippet off the back of a heavy NZ mayfly bomb. Basically just like i tie my king pogo double nymph rig .
David cast it up in front and to the left about a foot and this big trout just instantly came across and engulfed it !! Game on! Just Maybe this will work again! Well i just returned from a days guiding and virtually the same thing happened, so go out there and drown that willow grub- This has to be year of the willow grub!
Some days guiding I run over trout! Spot the trout!

My order arrived safe and sound.Your flies look stunning and have to be the best quality, well designed flies that i have ever purchased  in 27 years. You will be hearing from me with another order shortly and no doubt as well from the boys in the club.

Hello Stu

Just letting you know that we have been catching plenty long tail tuna on your Crystal baitfish flies ,we are convinced our hook up ratio has increased by using your flies and the black nickle hooks take some abuse.

Next week we are off to an area for very big King fish Sam cant wait to cast one of your 6/0 big eyes at one.We will let you know how we get on. Love your news letters by the way!

THE BIG MUD EYE HATCH IS STARTING_ GET THE BEST DRAGONFLY NYMPH PATTERN

April Guiding- nearly the end of the season!

This is a special month fishing for the Southland brown trout, normally gin clear low or normal flowing rivers, with plenty of trout moving around as they get ready for spawning.

Misty cold frosty mornings start the day with little wind, then the sun comes out. This is when the spotting and stalking gets good.

With the sudden drop in temperature and then the sudden rise in temperature when the sun pops out mid afternoon ,things start to happen.

Usually this instigates the mayfly nymphs to swim towards the surface and  emerge into beautiful dun mayflies.

So if you are in need of a good sight fishing for rising trout fishing fix before the end of the season, give me a call today as i have some April dates still available.

As for dates next year i have already got quite a few confirmed bookings coming in so if you wish to think ahead and not be disappointed  send me a email asap before i close for the winter and hopefully i can help you and recommend some accommodation in the local area.

FLY SHOP YOGA - BY GEORGE

Working in the fly shop for my son is not what you think!

I thought i was retired - but my son decided to fly me over for a holiday- never told me it was a working holiday- though!

He gets me up at the crack of dawn and makes me go and get his post and open the shop.

He disappears guiding nearly every day and i never see him , comes back and rearranges everything i have done in the shop !

I do meet some wonderful people in the shop - but at least half the people come in and tell me their life story.

If I come back next year i´m going to supply tissues for the tears, for some of these heart breaking stories that i,m told.

Dads Medicine cabinet

My son does not pay or feed me , but gives me bottles medicine for my help and along with my doctors pills it´s not too bad.

But recently my back is getting sore slaving over the counter.

So i have decided to do some Yoga with a small log under my back.

I recommend this to any fly shop worker who has big shoulders like me.
