March Is National Eye Donor Month

March marks the 30th Annual National Eye Donor Month and we have been keeping busy!

Eye Bank Chairman IPDG Phil Shober, President Jim Quirk and Public Relations Coordinator Kacey O'Connor visited Reading Health System in West Reading, PA to meet with nursing leadership. In the meeting, Jim discussed donation and transplant outcomes and Chairman Phil highlighted the Lions Club initiatives and achievements in the area.

Around the office, we are enjoying the completed laboratory and hung the dedication plaque! Additionally, Ken Steward, Director of Compliance and Regulatory Affairs celebrated his one year anniversary with the Lions Eye Bank on March 1.

For the month of March, the Lions Eye Bank of Delaware Valley Facebook page will be celebrating with cornea transplant facts and stories of donation. Be sure to LIKE our Facebook page to learn more about corneal transplants and celebrate National Eye Donor Month with us.

Jim Quirk Reappointed to Delaware Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Board

Eye Bank President/COO Jim Quirk was appointed by Delaware Governor Jack Markell to serve on the state's Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Board. This is Jim's third term on the board and the appointment will last until 2016.

Representatives from Organ, Eye and Tissue banks work with representatives from various state departments, including the Department of Health and Social Services, Department of Education and Division of Motor Vehicles. A physician, transplant recipient and family member of a donor are also invited to sit on the board. The Board works together to raise donor awareness in Delaware and increase the number of registered donors in the state. In addition, the Board is tasked with awarding grants from the Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Trust Fund to support programs aimed to increase organ, cornea and tissue donor awareness in the region.

For more information on applying for a grant, please visit the Governors Board website

Jim Quirk receives his Commission from Patricia after subscribing to the Oath of Office at the Recorder of Deed's office.

Baby's Sight Saved

Tracey recalls the day they learned of her newborn's eye condition.

"Peyton was one day old when he was diagnosed," she remembers. "We immediately received condolences, lots of pamphlets, information on how to obtain money for transportation and eyeglasses-but that's not what we needed.  No one could tell us how to make our son's vision as normal as possible."   Jimmy, her husband, added, "We simply wanted to know how to help Peyton enjoy being a kid and how to succeed in life.  We had many unanswered questions about how to help him rebuild his sight."

Peyton was born with a congenital eye condition called Peter's Anomaly.   Babies with this rare condition have central cornea cloudiness for which surgical intervention is usually needed as soon as medically possible followed by visual rehabilitation.  Peyton's condition affected both eyes.  At age 6 months, he had his first cornea transplant; his third transplant was in January 2013.

Look out for the rest of Peyton's story in this year's forSight annual newsletter!
