Tips for writing Public Officials
|
Organized, written thoughts can be very powerful and potentially more effective than a hasty phone call. Keep in mind that a well-written email is an efficient way to reach out, and it may even be preferred for many contacts. You can always follow up with a letter and reference your earlier email. From the Board of Education
|
The district receives more than 30 percent of its funding from the county. Over the past few years, that funding has essentially been flat, despite increases in expenses and enrollment that we had to cover.
This year, the Board of Education's request to the Board of County Commissioners included an increase of 13.6 million dollars needed to keep the lights on, our buses running, our buildings clean and meet other basic operational expenses, as well as restore cuts made during the Great Recession. We also asked for 10 million dollars to repair and maintain our 300 buildings.
Right now, the budget the county is considering again provides flat funding and two-million dollars for our buildings. If that passes, we will have to make additional cuts to cover basic operations and critical classroom supports.
The county commissioners are holding a public hearing on the budget this Thursday, June 6, at 5:30 p.m. in the Old County Courthouse at 301 W. Market Street. We encourage all our families to make their voices heard by attending the public hearing and sharing their opinions, whatever those opinions may be.
Have a great evening.

 Rally for Children
|
Hello fellow parent advocates,
The parent voice is needed now and it is critical that we are engaged in what is happening to our children! Please come rally at the County Commissioner's meeting June 6th. The purpose of the June 6th meeting is to support the Superintendent's budget for the 2013-2014 school year. Guilford County Schools is funded with local, state and federal dollars.
June 6th Rally for Education at the County Commissioner Meeting
- Old County Court House at 301 W Market Street
- Rally starts at 4:00, meeting starts at 5:30
- After the rally, you will have time to clear security and sign up if speaking
Our ask June 6th to the County Commissioners is simple. Please fund the Guilford County School budget, at the local level, in the amount requested.
- The County Commissioners have "flat funded" GCS for the past several years (for which we are thankful), but with an increase in enrollment and building space it has really been a cut.
- Superintendent Green says, "It is time". It is time to ask the County Commissioners for additional funds to help cover the cost of these many increases. Details in the attachment provided.
- Without full funding from the County Commissioners, we will feel the deep cuts at all levels. Full funding here is critical.
However, our presence June 6th is also about our support of public education at all levels, including the state level. Hundreds of parents present June 6th will make the news and our decision makers in Raleigh WILL see our force. We are looking at many threats to public education at the state level.
- Cut to teacher assistants
- Increase in class size
- Opportunity Scholarships/Vouchers - taking money away from public education (money that could go to teachers and teacher assistants)
- Making our Board of Education partisan and changing 4 year terms to 2 year terms (more campaigning and less years serving)
- Giving school buildings, buses and servers to the County Commissioners to control
We need parents to speak, but we also need parents, teachers and community members present with signs and wearing school spirit wear.
Please see on the side for talking points and cheat sheet, conference call information and sign up for speakers and more. We are here to support you! If you do not want to speak, please find at least five people to bring with you.
