What is  the AR Program (Accelerated Reader)
One way we encourage reading is through the Accelerated Reader (AR) program.

This is how the program works:
1) Teachers assign students to a specific AR reading level based on assessments.
2) Students are then allowed to check out books from the AR section of the Media center.
3) Once the student has read the AR book, they then take a multiple choice test in their classroom on the computer
4) For each test a student takes, they earn points.  These points are used to spend in our AR store each quarter.  With these points students can buy different items.

Note:
- Tests can only be taken at school, but parents can view the AR list and assigned levels by clicking here

From this list- students can also check out books from the public library as well as reading books online using our e-reader.

What is Right at GES
This month our cheetah tracks is focused on the many exciting programs that have been developed to help our GES students build character and become strong community participants and leaders.

  • Mentoring at GES: This year a mentoring program for boys(Knights) and girls (S.T.A.R.S) was started by our staff to help provide guidance and build success in our GES students.
  • Becoming a Champion:  GES students are learning about becoming champions, by Never giving up, Encouraging Others and Doing their best. (NED show)
  • Growing community leaders:  GES ACES Program has been implementing the Growing Community Leaders Program. This program was written for Guilford County Schools ACES programs by Cathryn Berger Kaye. " She is a national and international service learning consultant. She works with state departments of education, university faculty and students, school districts and classroom teachers on a variety of education issues such as service learning, student leadership, and respectful school communities. " ACES staff members at GES are very excited to be a part of this wonderful training to help grow strong leaders for our school and communities.
NED
The NED Show will be presented on March 11

The NED Show combines a positive message with humor, storytelling, audience participation and memorable
object lessons like yo-yo and magic tricks. The assembly teaches students how they can develop three valuable characteristics to become  CHAMPIONS at school and in life. The lovable character NED, and his message, are an inspiration for all ages.
MentoringMentoring is happening at GES
We are excited about THE KNIGHTS -a male mentoring program that will provide solutions to promote success in the lives of male students. This is accomplished by developing character in male students through seminars, sport events, community service and tutoring.   During the school year we meet the last Wednesday of each month after school from 2:30pm-5:00pm. Each student is assigned a male mentor on staff that checks in with them and provides one-on-one assistance during the instructional day to help them develop good character and academics.  THE KNIGHTS is offered only to current 4th and 5th grade students.

S.T.A.R.S In October of 2012, Mrs. Jolly and Ms. Bradley founded the S.T.A.R.S. mentoring program.  S.T.A.R.S. or Sisters Together Achieving Real Success is a girls mentoring program that was started to provide guidance to the girls at Guilford Elementary School.  Through monthly meetings and one-on-one mentorships, these girls have been able to learn about building friendships, career choices for the future, different athletic opportunities, and even be part of a fashion show.    For more information on the mentoring program, please contact Mrs. Jolly or Ms. Bradley.
Make a "change" in the lives of our students!!!
We are on our way! The "Change for a Change" program is well on its way to making a difference in our students' lives. We have been collecting donations for almost 5 weeks and have raised $574.00 WOW!

What a wonderful start in our attempt to get out Wii plus Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) gaming system. The students are very excited at the prospect of 8 DDR dance boards, 7 Wii Fit boards, pedometers, yoga mats and exercise games galore! I appreciate all who have donated to our goal and encourage you to keep sending in any amount of change or dollars that you can. We have until March 28th to collect as much as possible. Bring in what you have and drop it off in our collection jug in the gym. Let's help our children make a positive "change" in their physical lives!
Thank you again!

March is Youth Art Month:
Every year GES participates in the Guilford County Schools Youth Art Month Exhibition. This year we have 11 students artwork in the show. Because space is limited, we had to make choices among many wonderful student works.  The show runs from March 8 - 24th and is held at the Greensboro Cultural Arts Center, 200 North Davie Street, Greensboro, N.C. A reception for participating students and families will be held on Sunday, March 24th from 1:30 to 3:30. We are very proud of these students and their artwork. Please come see the show!

The GES Art Club, which meets once a week, is set up to provide additional art opportunities to students who have a serious interest in the subject and have artistic abilities and talent. We are working on producing work that will enhance the environment of GES. Murals and sculptures are being developed. The Art Club has produced signage and props for the Black History Month presentation and will contribute decorations for the Multi-Cultural Festival in April. Also, please notice the framed student artworks hanging throughout the school. We are continually adding to and changing this display in an effort to showcase students' efforts and to brighten up the school!

Other exciting things at GES

Hospitality Committee:

Getting Ready for Staff Appreciation Week

Out hospitality is in charge of decorations, making students, staff and family feel welcome.  We are always looking for new faces and new ideas. The hospitality committee has been hard at work planning an appreciation week for our staff.  The next planning meeting is Tuesday, April 9.

How can we keep the GES community up to date?
This year at GES we have been focused
on making communication a priority with our parents, students and staff.  Using different methods of communication (telephone, email, social media and paper) our communication committee  makes sure that parents are always kept informed about what is happening at GES.  If you enjoy keeping others informed, or have ideas to share, please email us.

Cheetah Fest:  Each year we celebrate the end of EOG's by holding a Cheetah Fest (Carnival).  There will be bounce house, games, food and fun.  We are looking for parents to help plan this event.  Please email us if you are interested in  being a part of the planning.

Labels for education- We also collect Labels for Education, and starting in March we will be having a contest to see which class can bring in the most labels for education.  Watch for more details about this. We are looking for more people to help count the labels, so please email us if you are interested in helping with this.

Coke Rewards-
As another way to earn stuff for our school, we also collect Coke Rewards.
