AgeOptions NOW is a publication of AgeOptions, a nonprofit organization. As the Area Agency on Aging of Suburban Cook County, AgeOptions serves 130 communities within 30 townships.

As I complete two years as the chair of AgeOptions Board of Directors, I leave with gratitude and a feeling of honor to be able to have served you in this leadership capacity.

Home for the Holidays?
Look for Signs Older Family Members May Need Help

For many Americans, the holiday season is one of the few times of the year that they and their parents and other older relatives spend quality time together.

That makes it an ideal time to determine if older loved ones need assistance in any areas of their lives, such as personal care, home maintenance, physical problems, finances and transportation.

New Nutrition Site Opens in Melrose Park

A new congregate dining site in Melrose park is scheduled to open December 2, with a grand opening on December 3. It will provide hot, nutritious lunches and activities on weekdays.

Two west suburban churches, Neighborhood United Methodist Church in Maywood and Faith Cathedral in Bellwood have joined Caring Together, Living Better (CTLB) and plan to start offering services and resources for caregivers.

Diabetes Education Program Extends Reach to Latinos

The percentage of Illinois adults diagnosed with diabetes rose 60 percent between 1995 and 2010 and is projected to rise another 25 percent by 2020, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Jonathan Lavin, AgeOptions president and CEO, and the AgeOptions leadership team were among approximately 50 people attending the National Assoication of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a) six-state Federal Region 5 meeting on October 28.

Legacy Corps Volunteers Complete Year of Service

Eighteen Legacy Corps members ended their 2012-2013 term of service October 31 with a total of 6,570.25 hours of service. Nine of the 2012-2013 volunteers reached 450 hours of service, which entitles them to an education award that they can use themselves or transfer to a child or grandchild.

The 2013 Oro Latino Fiesta included something for everyone, from Zumba exercise and performances by a folkloric dance troupe to presentations on the Affordable Care Act, immigration issues and dealing with depression.

Close to 100 older adults took part in the annual Fiesta on October 26 at MacNeal Hospital.

The newest AgeOptions video, Celebrating Aging: Caring in a New Era, premiered at the September 2013 fundraiser. Lisa Parker, master of ceremonies for the event, also narrated the video, which details what "Caring in a New Era" means to AgeOptions.

AgeOptions 2012 Video Receives Award

Where can you find updates on what AgeOptions is doing alongside news on topics affecting older adults? If you visit the AgeOptions Facebook page, you already know you're likely to find something interesting almost every day.

Every year more older adults require access to community resources to enable them to remain in their homes. Last year, AgeOptions and our community senior service partners made a difference in the lives of 234,231 individuals - an increase of more than 33,000 from the previous year.

The need for our services and programs continues to grow as the population of older adults increases ever year. Unfortunately, support from federal and state governments is on the decline at the same time the older population is increasing dramatically.

You can make a difference in the lives of the older adults in our communities.

At this time of year when we all take the opportunity to think beyond our own circumstances, we ask you to remember the older adults in our communities and the effect your support will have in their lives.

Please consider making a year-end contribution to AgeOptions and help us continue to provide life-changing services for older adults - services such as information and assistance, home-delivered and congregate meals, benefits assistance and so much more. Your support will help to provide the much-needed financial resources to continue these vital programs and services.
