From the Principal's Office
|
Dear St. Joseph's RCS Families,
It was excellent to see all of our parents and grandparents last week. We really would not have such success without your collaboration and support. Thank you for all that you do!
This Thursday, April 28th, is Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day. If you plan to take your child with you to work please notify the office in advance and their absence will be excused and will not be marked on their attendance record.
This past Friday I informed our school community of a change to our school hours for the 2016-2017 school year. Our day will begin at 8:25 am and end at 3:20 pm. To expand on that, our arrival will begin at 8:10 am and will end at 8:25 am. Dismissal will begin at 3:20 pm and end at 3:35 pm. We understand that this will require all of you to have to make adjustments to your routine next year. We hope that this advance notice will allow you significant time to prepare for this adjustment. Before care will still begin at 6:45 am next year, and after care will end at 6:00 pm.
Parents of 6th and 7th graders, there will be a Catholic High School Fair on April 30th, at the College Park Marriott, 3501 University Blvd. East, Hyattsville from 11:00 am--2:00 pm. This is a great opportunity to get information from all the Catholic High Schools you are interested in.
Although the school calendar states that summer uniforms begin on May 2nd, please feel free to have your child wear their summer uniform to school on warmer days, such as today.
We have a lot of new families interested in enrolling for next year! Last week we had 5 students shadow, and I have more tours scheduled for this week! New families entering K-8th, you may apply online http://stjosrcs.org/registration/ by clicking on the TADS link. To register for our PRE-K program please download the PRE-K registration form from our website and bring or mail to the school office. Keep spreading the word about St. Joseph's RCS!
Are you training for our 3rd annual 5k Race and 1 mile Fun Run on May 14th? Follow the link HERE and choose the appropriate link to register as a parent or student. You may also return the paper registration form to the school office.
St. Joseph's RCS will have our 2nd annual Vacation Bible School this summer July 11th-15th. We had a wonderful time last year sharing a faith filled journey with our camp attendees. We look forward to doing the same this summer!
Are you looking for something exciting to do outside this summer? St. Joseph's RCS has set a date for our 2nd annual Golf Tournament. We will have the tournament on August 19th. Mark your calendars, and get ready to play at Cross Creek this summer! For more information visit the GOLF TOURNAMENT PAGE on our website or REGISTER HERE.
I will be competing in the Columbia Triathlon and Diamondman Challenge for a good cause! The first race, on May 15th will be a 32 mile triathlon, and the second will be a 70.3 mile half-ironman on September 10th. I'm hoping all the miles I spend training for these races will result in funds raised towards our Principal's Emergency Tuition Assistance fund. If you would like to donate towards this cause, please visit our school website www.stjosrcs.org and click the DONATE button at the bottom of the page. Under the add instructions link, type RUN. Thank you to all of you have already helped donate to this cause!

Teacher Appreciation Week May2-6, 2016 ![geography-children-banner.jpg](http://files.ctctcdn.com/ca98f95e001/ebfd65e1-ffdd-4197-b2da-e7043868d1ba.jpg?a=1124513766642)
|
Oh! How We Love Our Teachers! Teachers give us so much. And though we know we can't ever thank them enough, we can take a moment during Teacher Appreciation Week to share our appreciation for the special educators in our lives.
In an effort to get ALL parents and students involved in honoring the teachers, St. Joseph's RCS will have a "theme-a-day" schedule. Each day, the teacher can be presented with a small token relevant to the theme of that day.
Parents can choose any day of the week to help their children show their gratitude to their teachers. Some may choose to participate every day and others may want to choose just one day.
The idea is to get parents and students to show our teachers that their love and dedication haven't gone unnoticed.
Please remember the teachers who are sometimes overlooked, such as computer, music, band, PE, art, Spanish, library and resource teachers.
Here are the suggested themes:
Monday, May 2
- "Love from the Kitchen" - Bring your teachers a homemade or store bought treat; an item to use in the kitchen (candle, special soap), or purchase a restaurant/coffee shop gift certificate.
Tuesday, May 3 (National Teacher Day!) - "Words from the Heart" - Students and parents can write a personal note, a poem, or draw a special picture for their teachers. (This is probably the most important, easiest, and most meaningful!)
Wednesday, May 4
- "Supplies!" We love our Classroom! - Suggestions include school supplies that get used up quickly (pencils/loose leaf/construction paper), a book from the Scholastic Book Fair (held at St. Joseph's May 2-6) for the classroom, personalized notepads, sharpie/dry erase markers.
Thursday, May 5
- "Body, Mind, Spirit" - What teacher wouldn't love some hand cream, a book store gift certificate, religious item, or a massage/nail salon gift certificate, to help remind them to pamper themselves?
Friday, May 6
- "Leisure Time" - Health and fitness accessories, colorful beach bag, drink mix and a fancy pitcher, home improvement store gift certificate, sporting event tickets, travel accessories.
We hope that this themed approach will act as a springboard for creative ideas to recognize our teachers.
Please feel free to participate as much or as little as you would like.
Thanks for helping our teachers realize how important they are in the lives
of the students and parents of St. Joseph's Regional Catholic School!
Contact Marianne Schwenz at [email protected] or 301.572.2229 if you have any questions or comments.

Kindergarten is again learning about composting and taking care of this wonderful planet that God created. Ms. Kenney and Mrs. Miller helped the Kindergartners prepare their worm bin and
on Thursday, 1000 worms arrived to work in their new home. The kids will do several experiments using the worms next week and they are enjoying feeding them their snack scraps! ![](http://files.ctctcdn.com/ca98f95e001/c46cb0da-1152-496c-a76c-694c14f65fe5.jpg?a=1124513766642)
