From the Principal's Office
|
Dear Families,
HAPPY SUMMER! I hope you are all enjoying the first days of summer break. We are here at school cleaning, planning for next year, and celebrating a successful school year! I like to look back at the old newsletters to remind myself of all we accomplished this year and there is more to come! The roof will be replaced over the summer, blinds installed and more carpets cleared. Watch your email for volunteer opportunities!
Yearbooks have arrived! Each family may come and pick one up during summer office hours. Additional copies are for sale for $25 each.
The final awards ceremony was FANTASTIC! So many children received awards for amazing achievements this year! It was also wonderful to thank our parents and our priests for all they did for us this year! Please see the wonderful pictures from Mr. Bunge!
Congratulations to our Ms. Atash, the Teacher of the Year. Your dedication to teaching is an inspiration. You are helping to create a world where people construct a proper sentence, write in beautiful script and create an inspired story. Thank you for all you share with us.
In an attempted to make tuition payments a little easier for families, we have changed the structure of payments through FACTS. All fees will be collected on June 30th. Tuition payments will be equally divided by ten, and payments will be made on the last day of each month from July 31st to April 30th. All financial aid will be deducted at the beginning and taken off equally from each payment. If you preferred the previous structure, you may pre-pay in FACTS to match the way it pulled before. If you would prefer to not use FACTS, you may pay the tuition and fees in full by June 30th.
On July 1st Mr. Hooker will transition to principal and I will transition to assistant principal. I will be leaving for my family sabbatical in late August and will return at Christmas. I look forward to Skyping with the kids and emailing the teachers. I hope everyone has a blessed summer!
St. Joseph's will be having our first ever Vacation Bible School this summer! It will be July 6th-10th. It will be for children going into Kindergarten through fifth grade. The kids do not need to be students at the school. The camp will run from 8:30- Noon each day that week.
St. Joseph's Regional Catholic School summer office hours will be Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 9 am-12 noon. We are available other hours by appointment. We would be happy to schedule a tour or open the uniform exchange. Email schooloffice@stjosrcs.org or call 301-937-7154.

Kindergarten Commencement |
Dear Parents of the Kindergarten Graduates,
I heard that the Commencement Ceremony was wonderful. I was so sorry to miss it! I was called for Jury Duty and even had another ADW Principal in the jury room with me. Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful children with us this year and we look forward to seeing you at vacation bible school and then in the fall.
Thank You.
Peace and all Good,
Mrs. Anne-Marie Miller OFS

Boats and Buoyancy
|
The 7th grade learned about Archimedes prince and buoyancy. They were tasked with designing an aluminum foil boat that could withstand the weight of as many pennies as it could hold before it sank. They will do an extension on this project at the beginning of next school year.

|
Buffon's Needles
|
7th grade used an experimental approach to geometric probability called Buffon's Needles. Using toothpicks, they randomly dropped toothpicks onto lined paper, and counting the number of toothpicks that did not fall on the paper or fell touching a line. Using a formula, students were able to compare the ratio of the number dropped to the total number of toothpicks that crossed a line. The calculation you get should come out close to that of pi ( π). One group got as close as 3.15.

|
The Green House Effect
|
6th grade was able to demonstrate the green house effect using plastic or glass bowls to represent the atmosphere. They measured the inside and outside temperatures over 15 minutes and analyzed their results. Most groups recorded inside temperatures from 102° to as high as 110°.

|
Solar Ovens
|
6th graders made solar ovens and took them out to make smores. Some ovens got as hot as 120°.

 Old Tennis Balls Needed
|
The new science lab looks great! We would like to try to keep it that way by placing tennis balls on the bottoms of all the chair legs. Please bring your used, old tennis balls to Mrs. Pappas so that the floors can stay scruff free. Every ball helps!
