A story appeared recently in the Daily Telegraph to the effect that girls at one school are being given lessons in "boasting." The notion is that many young women are held back by not being forward enough.
The idea has been to hold a "blow your own trumpet week" which teaches self-promotion and celebrating success.
Many children, however, find it hard to promote themselves for fear that they will get a backlash from their peers.
As part of a week-long series of activities starting on Monday, girls at the single-sex school highlighted in the Telegraph will be asked to write down personal achievements such as passing music exams or making new friends on postcards which will be put up around the school.
They will then be asked to reflect on individual achievements in each subject during lessons, make videos on the theme and act out plays depicting success and failure in drama classes.
Mrs Hanbury, head of the school, said, "Within the world of work, women do find it hard to self-promote because they have this view that there will be a backlash; that being seen as too confident or vain will actually make people dislike them.
"Men have been shown to get over that. They don't care if people don't like them because they want this job or this pay rise.
"People who stand up and shout and cheer about themselves on television are probably more likely to be arrogant in the sense that they don't have deeply embedded confidence in their abilities and therefore exaggerate their achievements and ignore their failures.
"Women do not support each as often as they might. This is the other side of things; we need to help the girls to congratulate and be happy for each other.
"When young people lack self-esteem, so in order to make themselves feel better, they put others down."
