Progress Report
2013-2014

As summer begins, I want to share that EEO has completed another successful, productive school year! All of this has been made possible by support from donors like you. Thank you for your care and commitment to growing and deepening education opportunities on the Family Islands of The Bahamas. After offering 14 continuous years of programs on Harbour Island and Eleuthera, we are seeing the tremendous impact that our programs, our teacher training and our alumni are making in communities across the islands. I have included a link to our 2013-2014 Progress Report in which you can explore the specific ways our work this past school year reached over
180 children, their families, and teachers.

Some highlights include:
  • 6 on-site EEO special education/literacy programs within the schools of Harbour Island and Eleuthera
  • 180 students being served at the start of school year with 35 mainstreamed by May 2014
  • New partnership established between EEO and the Hawn Foundation to support the implementation of the MindUp program for Eleuthera teachers and students
  • Bahamian Ministry of Education collaboration on special education goals for country
  • Academic program evaluation by Emily DeLiddo from Columbia University's Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, as well as continuing literacy curriculum support for teachers and EEO staff across several weeks
  • Initial and follow-up hearing screenings for over 100 students and subsequent treatment and on-going care
  • Summer school and after-school literacy programs for more than 50 students

Our 2014-15 plans include:
  • Continued auditory and visual testing of students in all 3 districts of Eleuthera
  • Expansion of the Harbour Island Resource Center to better house the dual high school and primary programs' pull-out sessions for small group instruction
  • Return of high-calibre seminar presenters, including The Hawn Foundation's MindUp program and staff of Stephen Gaynor School, NY, to train local teachers in modifications and strategies

We cannot underestimate the crucial role that the community plays in the success of our work, from the Bahamian Ministry of Education, to Bahamian citizens, to residents, and visitors.   Each group provides support essential to ensuring that EEO continues to deepen its work and reach as many students and their families as possible.  As a key member of the community, I am grateful for your consideration of supporting an EEO resource room this upcoming school year.

Your  support gives EEO the chance to thrive and help so many children!
I am very grateful for your help.

Please call me or email me with any questions you may have. I look forward to hearing back from you and I welcome the opportunity to introduce you to EEO's teachers and students the next time you are on island-I'm sure you will be as proud as I am of all the lives being enriched by the work of EEO!
