Introducing the Public Access Collection
In this issue we inaugurate a new feature in desLibris: the Public Access Collection. Inspired by the release of The
Future Now: Canada's Libraries, Archives and Public Memory from the Expert Panel of the Royal Society of Canada in late November, we have published the report along with a collection of 13 monograph titles from the bibliography in the report. These titles are available in full online (with DRM-free downloading) from desLibris. To view the report, click on the cover. To access all titles in this collection, click here.
We will introduce additional Public Access Collections in coming months.

Focus on Canada
In the report, the point is made that "Canada's libraries need a healthy publishing industry and Canadian society needs to be exposed to thoughts, ideas, and stories produced by Canadian writers...When they try to distribute their books in electronic formats, Canadian publications become lost in the international marketplace, hidden even from Canadians."

Canadian Electronic Library helps address this problem by providing a libraries with a convenient and affordable way of placing Canadian books from independent publishers in front of their readers.
Canadian Subject Headings
The report also points out that "search terms used to locate ebooks are American-oriented and Canadian books become lost in an immense jungle of available titles. " Again CEL provides assistance by tagging many of the nearly 60,000 titles in the collection with Canadian Subject Headings, adding a Canadian focus to Library of Congress Subject Headings.
