What is it? Where is it?

Borrowing from our friends at CBC radio's popular "This is That"...

What is it?

Canadian Electronic Library is a collection of ebooks licensed for library use. There are currently over 56,000 titles included, and hundreds of new titles are added each month. There are 15,000 books from independent and scholarly Canadian publishers and nearly 40,000 public documents from public agencies, think tanks and policy institutes. Over 6,500 of these titles have been published since 2013. Over 52,000 are available under a subscription license.

Where is it?

This content is available on two platforms: the popular ebrary interface, and the new made-in-Canada desLibris platform. Canadian Electronic Library is found in over 200 libraries in Canada. Read on to find out why it's the best way to bring More Canada to your library.

CEL Is an e-Resource

By placing a link to CEL or desLibris on your e-Resource page, you can bring this rich body of primary source material to your readers simply and directly. Since our license offers unlimited use with no checkouts or holds, there is really no difference between an ebook collection and an e-resource covering newspapers or magazines. All titles are available all the time. With a simple proxy server or link resolver, offsite access is also available, so anyone with a library card may use the books. We offer a selection of graphics to choose from. Here are two examples:

If you are using the Canadian Electronic Library platform, the link will go to your library's customized site.
If you are using the desLibris platform, the link will go to your library's IP-authenticated site.

Since MARC records are supplied for all ebook titles, you may, if you wish, load all or selected records to your library catalogue so that they are viewed by users as "books." But that's optional.

More on "Getting Started" here.

Public Documents Tell Canada's Story

Our librarian-editors regularly comb the websites of over 1,000 think tanks, advocacy groups and public agencies to find the monographs that are worth preserving and disseminating. The Public Documents Collection makes this unique body of primary source material available to library users, delivering over 37,000 titles for immediate use, and adding 100 new titles each week.

Royal Society of Canada Expert Panel Report on Canada's Libraries

Just released, The Future is Now is posted on desLibris as a public document available to all.

View and download this report through desLibris by clicking on the cover link.

While you're there, have a look at other titles related to libraries and library management.

Discovery Rules

In addition to the free MARC records supplied for every title, CEL also shares metadata with a growing number of discovery services. If your library is using one or more of the services below, you'll be glad to know that they provide (or soon will be providing) access to CEL and desLibris collections. For more information, contact your vendor representative.
