From The Principal's Desk

Dear Parents and Friends,

Term one was kicked off in typical Nedlands fashion, very busy. We are living our motto "Experience the Opportunities".

Congratulations to all staff, students and parents who were involved in the launch of the Acts of Service program. It was a terrific assembly. Both the Governor and Mrs McCusker commented very positively on the strength of our music program, the ability and nature of our children and the significance of the program.

Swimming lessons are drawing to a close as we move into trials for our upcoming swimming carnivals. All years one to seven children will be involved.

We will officially present badges to our term 1 Student Councillors, Assembly Councillors and House Captains and Vice Captains at an Assembly this Friday - 1st March. Parents of those students are invited to attend.

I look forward to speaking to as many groups as possible at the Parent Teacher meetings this week. This is an important opportunity for parents to gain an insight into the way the year groups operate throughout the year. We look forward to an eventful year as we celebrate our centenary.

Further information:

Parent - Teacher Meetings

Parent -teacher information evenings will be held on the 27th and 28th of February. A timetable has been posted in the most recent Newsflash.

Authority for Student to Leave School Premises

Parents must come to the administration office to complete the Sign out book and complete an Authority for Student to Leave School Premises to be signed by admin staff and then the slip taken to the classroom where the teacher will allow you to take your child.

Upon returning to school or arriving late to school there is no need to come through the office but you must take your child to their classroom.

Sick children will be sent to the office by the classroom teacher with a form and the administration staff will call the parent to advise them of the situation. Please come to the front office to pick up your sick child and sign out on the Sick / Injured form. Thankyou.

2013 State Election
Sausage Sizzle + 'Busy Buskers' - Saturday 9th March   9am to 2pm

Once again, our school will be used as a Polling Booth for the forthcoming state election.

We will be taking advantage of this opportunity to raise money to go towards improving some sections of the schools grounds as part of our Centenary Celebrations - mainly the garden area near the original entrance to the school.

We will be holding a Sausage Sizzle and Busy Busker Stage on the day so will need adult and student volunteers for a one hour session between 8.00am and 2.00pm.

Sausage Sizzle

We require two adults and two students for each hour to run the stall.

Busy Busker Stage

A 'Busy Buskers' stage will be set up for students to perform on the veranda of the school to draw attention to the Sausage Sizzle and promote the school's music program. This was a fantastic initiative started a few years ago and creates a wonderful atmosphere and entertainment for the many visitors to our school.

We need a group of young musicians to busk at every 15 minute interval between 9.00am to 2.00pm on the day of the election. The children can perform solo or with a friend or friends.

A more comprehensive note will go home this week.

I will need 3 - 4 parents to assist me with the preparations for the day. If you can assist please contact me ASAP.

Thank you.

Geoff Jones

HAVE YOU RECEIVED THE SCHOOLKIDS BONUS?

Do you know about the Schoolkids Bonus?  It is a new cash payment to help eligible families and students with the costs of primary and secondary school studies. Around 1.2 million families have already benefitted from the first wave of payments in January 2013 - have you?

If you receive a family or income support payment, including Family Tax Benefit Part A, you could be eligible to receive $410 a year for each primary student and $820 a year for each secondary student, with half paid in January and half paid in July.

The Schoolkids Bonus replaces the Education Tax Refund (ETR) and is a much simpler system. You no longer need to collect receipts and payments are made automatically so you don't have to wait months to make a claim via your tax return.  Unlike the ETR you can choose how you use the payment to best support your children's education - whether it be school books, stationery, uniforms, school fees, or excursions.

Check your eligibility by visiting australia.gov.au/schoolkidsbonus and if you think you might have missed out on the January payment, contact Centrelink - either in person at a Centrelink-Medicare Office or by calling 132 468. Hard copies of the brochure and factsheet are also available (free of charge) and can be ordered by contacting us at schoolkidsbonus@fahcsia.gov.au or website: www.fahcsia.gov.au/our-responsibilities/families-and-children/benefits-payments/schoolkids-bonus

Nut Products

As a result of discussions with the Department of Health and parents we ask that parents of all students avoid all nuts and the use of nut based spreads in the provision of snacks and lunches to students at the school. This means avoiding peanut paste, hazelnut spread and bags of nuts. It does not include muesli bars.

P&C Social and Fundraising Activities

Your P&C has another fantastic line up of events for your entertainment this year. 2013 will see a return of the famous Quiz Night and a whole new family event for Term 1. We are looking for volunteers to get involved in the planning and organisation of these events. Becoming involved is a great way to meet other parents and is very rewarding. No experience is necessary just a willingness to be a part of the school community. If you are interested please contact Sasha Laurance on 0458 782 207 or sashalaurance@hotmail.com

Centenary News 2013

Our Centenary - starting the celebrations

On 29 January 1913, a small school on Kingsway in Nedlands was officially opened. A century later, Nedlands Primary School accommodates over 500 students. This year we celebrate how far the school has come, its accomplishments and its milestones.

We have a strong line up of activities planned for throughout the year and there's something for everyone.

100 Acts of Service - actsofservice.com.au

To start the year, we launched the Acts of Service program which has been designed to encourage and reward students who participate in volunteering and community work. From Year one to seven, every student will be able to get involved and appreciate the joy of giving back.

In just the first week over 327 hours were logged by students and included activities including helping making cards for grandma and doing jobs for Mum, to picking up rubbish along the foreshore and helping a new person settle in at school.

Students log on to the website, using their mathletics passwords, to record their Acts. Certificates/ Badges will be awarded at School assemblies when students hand in their list of Acts, signed be their parent, as follows:

            * Bronze Certificate - 10 Acts;

            * Silver Certificate - 25 Acts;

            * Gold Certificates - 50 Acts;

            * Acts of Service Badge - 100 Acts

If you are in the community and would like some student volunteers, please contact the school and we will put a notice in the school newsletter asking for help. You may find yourself inundated with calls!
