From The Principal's Desk

Dear Parents and Friends,

Welcome to Nedlands Primary School for 2013! This is an especially exciting year for the School as it is our Centenary year. There are many great events happening this year to commemorate the School's 100th birthday and we look forward to sharing them with you.

It has been quite a hot start to the year and we remind parents to ensure their child has a suitable hat and drink bottle with them.

We welcome all new families to Nedlands and hope that they have a happy and successful time as members of our school community. A particularly warm welcome to our guests from the Huijia School in Beijing who will be with us for most of term one.

Parent - Teacher Meetings

Parent - Teacher information evenings will be held on the 27th and 28th of February once most of the swimming lessons have finished and staff have had time to assess and plan for the best possible learning programs for all children. A timetable will follow in the next newsletter.

Acts of Service Assembly

You are invited to join the students and staff in the official launch of the 'Acts of Service' program at the School Assembly on Friday 15th February 2013 at 8.45am in the Altius Centre. The "100 Acts of Service" program is a new initiative that aims to change the way our students view their place in the community, and has been developed as part of the 2013 Centenary Program for the school. The purpose of the program is to encourage and reinforce the value of community service, creating young people ready to take their place in society. Acts of Service performed by the students will be recorded by the students on a secure website  www.actsofservice.com.au. The students will each be able to log on and update the Acts of Service they undertake. As students attain a certain number of 'Acts', they will be recognised with a special certificate. On completion of 100 Acts they will receive a commemorative badge.

For more information on how you can support your child and understand this program please visit the website www.actsofservice.com.au.

Jane Leaversuch on behalf of the Centenary Committee

Please be advised that the front office will be closed for the duration of this assembly.

Staff Movement

Late last year Our Art Specialist, Mrs Chester announced she will be on Long Service Leave and our Groundsman, Mr Rowlands, has moved interstate. In January Mr Malcolm was appointed Principal at Fremantle Primary School. Mrs Smith is currently on leave. As a result, we are pleased to welcome several new staff to our school.

Miss Alexandra Tucker - Year 6

Mr Travis Vredenbregt - Year 5

Mrs Tahlia Anver - Year 3

Mr Randall Smith - Grounds Keeper

Health & Safety Issues

All girls and boys are reminded that their hair must be tied back once it reaches shoulder length. This is a health and safety issue and as such forms part of our uniform policy.

It is important that children are wearing the correct footwear. While we understand that many children prefer sandals in the hot weather parents are reminded that joggers are required for all physical education sessions or if your child wishes to play on hard surfaces including the courts and the area near the flagpole.

2013 Academy Plate - Tennis

For the last four years Nedlands Primary School has entered this city-wide tennis competition. Last year Nedlands PS were the champion girl's team and the runner up in the boy's competition.

We look forward to again sending up to four teams to this year's event. The competition dates are as follows

(Pool play)

Girls Academy Plate         Mon 18th March (8:30am - 3:30pm)

Boys Academy Plate        Tues 19th March (8:30am - 3:30pm)

Finals to follow on the same day    Approx 4.45 - 7.30pm

(Reserve or additional day if required)    Friday 22nd March (8:30am -3:30pm)

Any boys or girls who are interested should see Mr de Souza for an entry form. These forms must be returned by Tuesday 19th February.

House Captains and Vice Captains

House Captains and Vice Captains were introduced to the school last Friday at a very short assembly due to the building work in the Altius Centre. Badges will be formally presented later in the term when the building work is less intrusive. Parents will be notified and invited to attend.

Nut Products

As a result of discussions with the Department of Health and parents we ask that parents of all students avoid all nuts and the use of nut based spreads in the provision of snacks and lunches to students at the school. This means avoiding peanut paste, hazelnut spread and bags of nuts. It does not include muesli bars.

Nedlands Students Experiencing Success

We are very proud to acknowledge the success of Nedlands students in their endeavours both in and out of school.

emerson sailing

Emerson R. (pictured) and her skipper were the state champions for the Manly Junior class of yachts in 2012 and participated in the 44th Manly Junior National Championships in Sydney in December. They sailed on Botany Bay in a series of 8 races and they finished third in the all-girl championship (girl crew and skipper) and 19th overall (open fleet).

Jack and Alexandra C. competed successfully in the National Schools Wildwater Championships. Many paddlers competed across a range of events, with success spread across many schools. In the Schools slalom competition Alexandria and Jack won a gold medal in U14 Mixed C2 and Alexandria won Bronze in U13 Girls K1. Jack won silver in U11 boys K1 division.

Huijia Students

Our 15 visitors from Huijia Private School in Beijing arrived last Wednesday.

Welcome to: Jane, Shirly, Sunny, Betty, Jennifer, Alice, Lean, Beryl, Sand, Edward, Zack, Ricky, William, Tony and Eric.

As well as their Huijia Teacher, Miss Rhonda Dai and their ESL Teacher from Perth, Miss Kate James.

The Huijia students will attend our school for this term with their last day on Tuesday 16th April. They have a special program to complete while they are here and will also integrate with our own students at various times throughout the week.

Sincere thanks goes to the Nedlands families who will Homestay students during their stay. Organisation for the tour to Beijing for our Year 7 students in September has already commenced. A large number of Year 7 students expressed their interest in being part of this tour and information will go home with all Year 7 students throughout this term.

In-Term Swimming Lessons

It was a very smooth start to the lessons that commenced last week for the Year 5-7 students at Cottesloe Beach. The last lesson will be this Thursday due to the special assembly on Friday for the launch of the 'Acts of Service'.

The year 1-4 students commence their lessons this coming Monday, 18th March. We welcome back Rhonda McCullough as the Swimming Supervisor. She is very organised and has a wonderful nature with the students.

ALL students should have returned their enrolment form to their class Teacher yesterday, 12th March. We are extremely fortunate to have our own pool for these lessons. The Instructors thoroughly enjoy teaching at this venue without the problems of conducting lessons in the larger public centres. For our students, it is very convenient and the time saved in bus travel is of enormous benefit to the normal ongoing school day.

Before School Swimming Training

Our sincere thanks goes to Annie Kitto who has, once again, offered to run the ever so popular, before school swimming training.

Training will commence next week with the Year 6/7s on Tuesdays and the Year 4/5s on Thursdays.

A note will go home this week with ALL interested students with a request for parent helpers for swimming training and preparing the after training breakfast snacks.

This special event relies on parent support. Last year we had a wonderful response from parents which meant that most parents were only rostered on for two or three occasions. Please return you note ASAP so that a roster can be prepared and sent home by this Friday, 15th February.

Swimming Dates for This Tem:

JUNIOR [Year 1-3] House Carnival:       Thursday 21st March

SENIOR [Years 4-7] House Carnival:      Friday 22nd March

Interschool Carnival [Years 4-7]:           Tuesday 3rd April

Instrumental Program

We are looking forward to another exciting year for instrumental music at Nedlands Primary School.

All lessons will commence next week and students will receive a comprehensive timetable by this Friday.

The ongoing students will be looking forward to continuing their ensemble music making as part of the Orchestra and Year 6/7 Concert Band. The Year 5 Concert Band will commence in Term 3 and the Year 4 string players will join the Orchestra in Term 4.

An information evening will be held in the next few weeks for parents of students commencing lessons - information to go home when a date is confirmed with the Instrumental Teachers.

Commonwealth Youth Service

Government House Ballroom - Monday, 11th March: 3.00pm.

Our Senior Choir has, once again, been invited to participate in this annual event. This is a very special occasion so with only four weeks preparation time Mrs Conroy and the students will be very busy rehearsing the songs to be performed.

Crunch & Sip

Nedlands Primary School is a Crunch & Sip school. We allow a set time in class for students to eat fruit or salad vegetables, and they can sip water throughout the day. Water bottles can be placed on the school desk. Crunch & Sip allows your child to re-energise, re-fuel and re-focus. Please send an appropriate amount of Crunch & Sip food every school day. For more information about Crunch & Sip visit www.crunchandsip.com.au

Waterwise Recognition

Nedlands Primary School was recognised as being a Waterwise school for 10 years. Since 2002 the program has made students aware of the importance of water in our lives, the value of the precious natural resource and to be responsible with water conservation in the environment.

At the end of the 2012 school year, the Honourable Mr Bill Marmion MLA, Minister for Environment and Water presented the school and the 2012 Head Boy and Girl with a new Waterwise sign which is on display as you enter the hall and a framed certificate of recognition, which is in the front administration office. Mrs Margaret Parker was given a certificate for 10 years as Waterwise coordinator.

Water Corporation visitors Mr Graham Cargeeg and Mr Mike Bryant admired our Waterwise gardens, whilst on a tour of the school after the assembly. As we have been enjoying summer, it is a timely reminder to our school community to be Waterwise around their homes, with short showers and restricted garden watering.

E.S.L. Reading Books

If you have not returned your green folder and reading books please place them in the white tray outside the E.S.L. Room. We are currently stocktaking our resources and we are missing some books. Please check at home, in bags and desk trays.

Mrs Parker, E.S.L. Teacher

Calling for Class Coordinators

Every year, each class has a Coordinator who compiles the Class List, maintains communication with the teacher should they need assistance, helps to disseminate communications between the school and parents and arranges all social events for their class. This year, the Class Coordinators will not be required to maintain an Emergency Contact "telephone tree" due to the school implementing the SMS emergency contact system. If you would like to know more about this role or would like to nominate yourself, please contact Anne Gribble on agribble@bigpond.net.au

P & C Association Sundowner - Friday 22nd February

All parents and children are invited to attend the P&C's welcome Sundowner, with a special invitation extended to those families new to the School. This is a well attended event and it's a great way to meet other School parents. We hope you can make it!

  • 5pm-8pm, Friday, 22nd February 2013 Altius Centre
  • Drinks are provided - please bring a plate of food to share
  • Kidz 'n Sport will provide entertainment for the children

P&C Social and Fundraising Activities

Your P&C has another fantastic line up of events for your entertainment this year. 2013 will see a return of the famous Quiz Night and a whole new family event for Term 1. We are looking for volunteers to get involved in the planning and organisation of these events. Becoming involved is a great way to meet other parents and is very rewarding. No experience is necessary just a willingness to be a part of the school community. If you are interested please contact Sasha Laurance on 0458 782 207 or sashalaurance@hotmail.com

P & C News

On behalf of the Parents & Citizens Association I would like to welcome all families back to NPS for 2013 - the school's centenary year! The P&C is helping NPS celebrate by organising several activities throughout the year starting with the Acts of Service Program. All parents are invited to join the students, staff and several dignitaries in the official launch of the 'Acts of Service' program at the School Assembly this Friday (15th Feb) at 8.45am.

The following Friday the P&C invites all NPS families to our annual Sundowner event at the school: 5-8pm on Fri 22nd Feb. This is a great opportunity to relax and meet new and old friends. Kids can join the Kidz n'Sport activities that the P&C provides on the School oval.

Then on Wednesday 6th March the P&C is holding its Annual General Meeting at 7.30pm in the school library. All executive positions are declared open and nominations for the same are invited. 2013 positions to be voted upon at the AGM are: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary;and executive committee members for: Social & Fundraising, Communications & Technology, NPS Centenary, Buildings & Grounds, Uniform Shop, Pool; and also the P&C representative to the School Board. Please note we are especially keen to find a volunteer for P&C Secretary in 2013! Nomination forms are available from the front office or by contacting Jane Massey (JMassey@plc.wa.edu.au).

Of course all parents are welcome to come to listen & participate in the P&C at any of our eight meetings throughout the year without becoming a committee member - your input makes a positive difference to the school and our kids' education. It's certainly a busy time of year but I hope to see you soon at some of these events.
