From The Principal's Desk

Dear Parents and Friends,

Each year we host a parent orientation session for the incoming Kindergarten, Pre-primary and new families. Last Friday this session took place in the Altius Centre and a variety of information pertaining to codes of behaviour, dress, timetables, curriculum reporting, school vision, P & C and the School Board role were discussed.

Our Kindergarten, Pre-primary and Year 1 programs are vital components of our whole school and comprise one third of the student population. We have established a very close working relationship with the University of Western Australia and our Early Childhood teachers spend a lot of time and effort working in partnership with the Graduate School of Education.

In 2013 we will be running three groups of kindergarten students, three pre-primaries and three classes of Year ones. Mrs Leila Earl will again be taking the kindergarten program at the Child Study Centre while Mrs McClorey will be returning on a Friday. Mrs Edelman, Mrs Zeid and Mrs Onley will continue in their current centres for 2013 as per 2012.

There are ongoing changes occurring in the Early Childhood domain (0 - 8 years) with the introduction of compulsory education for Pre-primary aged children next year. Our Kindergarten students will be increasing to 13 hours a week and the roll out of the Australian Curriculum (PP - Year 12).

Our Kindergarten, Pre-primary and Year 0ne programs are part of a K - 7 whole school approach with strong curriculum links from Kindergarten to Pre-primary, then Pre-primary to Year one. These programs are built around intentional teaching, which requires the teacher to:- identify outcomes for children to achieve, plan a program, implement specific strategies, evaluate the effectiveness of these strategies and then to report on the student progress.

Play continues to be a very important part of the ECE program and comprises Guided play which involves teaching children to work together to achieve an outcome, Child-directed play and learning where the teacher creates an environment that offers children the opportunity to discover and challenge. At the beginning of the new school year, each teacher will provide you with an information session for parents on the specifics of their particular centre/classroom as well as their overall team direction and philosophy.

This newsletter is not the final newsletter of the year, a Christmas message and final newsletter will be emailed to everyone next week.

Class Allocations for 2013

Thank you to those parents who have provided us with advance notice of their child's movements for 2013. Unless you have notified us in writing that your child is leaving, then your child/children will be placed in a class at Nedlands for 2013. We are very close to finalizing our staff arrangements for 2013 and once these are finalized then class lists and teacher allocations will be made public prior to the last day i.e. 17th December 2012.

School Board 2012

Thank you to all those hard working members of our School Board who have made an outstanding contribution to our school. Our board is viewed as an excellent model of an Independent Public School Board and we are expertly led by Jon Smeulders. I would like to personally thank Jon for his leadership and Ian Crooke, Trevor Phoebe, Holly Birch, Dr Trevor Parry, Dr Helen Wildy, Beverley Nicholls, Catherine Mendez and our executive officer Fay Moreton for an excellent year.

In 2013 we will commence business planning for our next three years as a result of external review of effectiveness provided by the Department of Education Services in 2012.

2012

Each year is always busy and schools are always under pressure to do more and we have to be very careful that we do not spread ourselves too thin. It is very easy to say yes to the many ideas presented by governments, community organisations, staff, parents, children and businesses....It is very hard to say no because many of the ideas have merit and are well intentioned.

This year our external review highlighted the many positives at Nedlands Primary School. The review will also help to shape our planning for the future.

In addition to the external review the School Board have also completed their own self analysis looking at how effective their progresses and procedures are. Finally, the staff have reflected regularly on the structure of the school timetable with a view to finding balance in program delivery. Schools do take on a lot and at times it seems as though we are seen as the solution to the ills of society. This year the balance seems sound as our 2012 NAPLAN results for Reading, Writing, Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar and Numeracy were all at expected levels for Years 3, 5 and 7.

However we have once again enjoyed a successful and rich year as summarized below:-

  • Swimming lessons and swimming carnivals (x 3)
  • Student exchange program with Huijia School in Beijing
  • Junior Choir performs at Government House Ballroom
  • P & C Bushdance
  • School ANZAC service
  • NPS Young Writers
  • TOMS
  • Dance Sport (Years 1 - 7)
  • Cross Country and Athletics carnivals (x 3)
  • Winter Interschool sport and Lightning carnivals
  • Children's Sing Fest and Massed Choir festivals
  • National Tree Planting Day
  • Lapathon and P & C Art Auction night
  • Christmas Concert
  • Senior's Concert
  • Year 7 Camp and Year 7 Exchange to Beijing

This list is far from exhaustive but an indication of some of the events and programs that the children at Nedlands Primary School are involved in.

Reports / Class Lists

Semester 2 reports go home with all Year 1 - 7 students on Monday December 17. Please go through these reports with your children to celebrate the many positives you will read. It is timely also to think about setting some improvement goals (this is important for the middle and upper primary grades).

Proposed class lists for 2013 will also be sent home with the reports. Please remember that these are in draft form and are subject to change. This has occurred most years due to the flexibility of our student enrolments as well as last minute staff changes.

Congratulations

Alice C. was awarded the Western Australian Gold Medal for Year 5 English at the ICAS award ceremony yesterday. Alice was the highest achiever in English among all Western Australian students who sat this exam at schools earlier this year. Congratulations Alice.

NEDLANDS END-of-2012 CHRISTMAS CONCERT

Congratulations to everyone involved!

A huge amount of time went into rehearsing, planning and setting up for this event.

With a new venue and the associated costs that needed to be accounted for, the planning by the school and the Concert Committee in moving outside of the school setting to a new venue for this annual event, presented some slight problems that we now know we can account for in 2013.

The positive feedback from parents and teachers has been immense despite the problems with the unexpected response to ticket sales and the length of the concert.

The children are to be commended for their outstanding performances on the night and their patience for a concert that extended beyond the expected finish time due to stage movement problems associated with the new venue.

The Octagon has already been booked for next year's Music Christmas Concert. Despite the atmosphere that is created when presenting this annual concert at school, the advantages of performing in this venue are immense:

  • weather considerations
  • quality of sound for performances
  • backstage area
  • size of the stage & tiered seating for parents

Coupled with the invaluable & much appreciated discount for the hirer's fee we receive from UWA, this new venue proved a huge success on the night.

The support from parents in setting up and packing up was overwhelming!

Sincere thanks does to all who assisted - what an amazing response and effort. THANK YOU!

An outstanding performance by an outstanding group of students!

 Homestay Offers for 2013

Our sincere thanks to the families who have offered to 'homestay' one of our visiting Chinese students for term one next year.

We would like to accommodate two more students so if you are able to help please contact Mr Jones ASAP by this Friday, 7th December. Homestay details and contact with the families who have offered to assist needs to be finalised next week.

The Huijia students will attend our school from Wednesday 6th February to Tuesday 16th April.

The Nedlands families that have assisted in the past with the 'homestay' program, have been wonderful and accepted these students into their homes as 'one of the family'.

The visiting students have always left Perth with special memories of their stay in Australia and it is quite a sad moment for them when they have to leave after their marvellous time at our school.

MacGill Cricket

On Monday the 26th of November, a selection of upper school Nedlands students competed in the MacGill Cup Cricket Competition. 16 teams competed in the competition with Subiaco being the eventual winners. "Nedlands A" won 3 of their 5 matches and "Nedlands B" won 4 of their 5 matches beating 2 Christchurch teams along the way. Standout players for the competition were Jamie C. for his all round excellence, Gabe W. for his consistent bowling and Guadalupe V. for her array of massive sixes. A huge thankyou also must be given to Andy Birch who coached and supervised the "A" team on the day. A great day out for all involved.

Dear Parents

Year 3 Room 9 have some unusual class pets... Stick Insects! or Extatosoma tiaratum. They are commonly known as Spiny stick insect, Spiny leaf insect, Spiny phasmid or ET.

They are an easy and interesting pet to keep and breed. This species is native to the east coast of Australia. They feed on a wide variety of plants including Eucalypts, Guava, Acacia, Calistemon, Calliandra, the list goes on. Females get to 140-150mm and are very well camouflaged. Males are darker in colour and don't grow as large. The eggs can hatch anywhere from 2 months to 2 years. Our current ET family have been raised by Mrs. Onley, Ruby G. and Room 9.

These pets are a wonderful way to learn about life cycles in Science. If you would like to have some for your child to keep at home, please send a note to Mrs. Christie. All you require is an enclosure. An upturned (vertical) aquarium or box can be used with pegged netting. Zip-up net enclosures can be purchased from Butterfly Dreams online. Care instructions will come with the insects. A small box needs to be sent with your child to collect the insects for their trip home.

Donate your Pencil Case to Kathmandu Kids

As the end of the year approaches we are again collecting pencil cases and contents for poor children in Kathmandu.  Last year 40kg of supplies were collected.  The children and teachers in the Shantinigar slum area were thrilled to receive their gift from Nedlands Primary School. We don't want to disappoint them next year!  Boxes will be available in each classroom for your donations in the last week of school.

Thank you,

Hilary, Jeremy and Julia W (Year 6)
