From The Principal's Desk
Dear Parents and Friends,
We are rapidly approaching the end of the school year. Information is being sent to you via notes, newsflashes and this newsletter. The school uses a variety of communication channels to inform parents of upcoming events and important dates. Please read your newsletters and newsflashes regularly and note key dates. If we have to change a date or an event we will notify you as soon as possible.
Bev Nicholls, our fabulous Year 7 teacher, has announced her retirement at the end of this school year. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Bev who has been a wonderful staff member and who has worked tirelessly to improve the educational outcomes of our students. Apart from her excellent classroom teaching her work in the Mathematics, Higher Order Thinking, Huijia Exchange Program and Tournament of Minds areas have allowed the school to excel. The work she has done over the years to prepare students for High School deserves praise. It is in part a result of her work in this area that the school has, historically, retained a healthy number of Year 7 students at the school.

Election for Year 7 Leadership Position 2013
Each year the school conducts elections for Head Boy and Head Girl and House captains. The students self nominate for the Head Boy and Head Girl role. Each student who nominates is required to submit a written application based on sustained good behaviour, leadership, initiative, sound organizational ability, caring for others and public speaking. While the house captains also need to demonstrate a positive attitude and an interest in physical education and sport as well as leadership qualities.
Once the written nominations have been received, the nominated students deliver a speech for their position and then elections are held by secret ballot.
Current Year 5 and Year 6 students (those Year 6's staying at Nedlands Primary School for Year 7) cast their votes along with the staff to determine who will fill these positions for 2013. Year 6 students attending in 2013 will also be able to represent the school as House Vice Captains. Each staff vote is counted as one vote, the same as the students. I know that there is always a perception that the voting system is 'screened' but this is not the case. All students have a fair and equal chance and this democratic process has proved to be very successful over many years at Nedlands Primary School. The students are very perceptive and choose wisely.

Professor Trevor Parry
Professor Trevor Parry who is a community member of our School Board has been honoured by the Commissioner for Children and Young People, Mrs Michelle Scott, by being made an Ambassador for Children and Young people. On behalf of the Nedlands Primary School Community I would like to extend our heart felt congratulations to Professor Parry on being bestowed this important role. I have added a short summary of Professor Parry's achievements for your interest.
Professor Trevor Parry AM's influence on diagnosis and treatment of childhood developmental issues has had profound impacts for all young Western Australians. Devoted to ensuring that WA children are able to have the best start in life, he created the WA branch of National Investment in the Early Years (NIFTeY). His experience as a medical professional adds to many boards and institutes dedicated to research into and support of childhood development.

Class Lists for 2013
Our leadership team and teachers are engaged in the process of forming class lists for 2013. The compilation of class groupings is a process involving many considerations. We deliberate on factors such as academic abilities, individual student needs, gender balance, social considerations, student relationships, friendship networks, parent requests and previous class placements/teachers.
Parents have had the opportunity to submit in writing any educational concerns or considerations to me, as Principal. Submissions should have been made by Friday 9 November 2012.
Forming class lists is a difficult task for all concerned as occasionally regardless of the care taken someone may be disappointed. Parents are encouraged to have positive conversations with children in the lead up to 2013.

School Board Elections
Two separate elections are running concurrently for the election of two staff and one parent position on the School Board. Voting opportunities for staff and parents alike will terminate at 3.30pm Friday 23 November. Both ballot boxes are located in the School Admin area. Results for both elections will be announced to the school Community on Monday the 26 November via a Newsflash.

HEY! HEY!
Congratulations to all the performers in last weeks Hey! Hey!
A fantastic entertaining event that the whole school thoroughly enjoyed due to the hard work the performers had put into rehearsing their items.
Thank you to the judges [except 'Black Beard'] the Year 7 MCs, Mr Ferguson for his backstage work and Mirella B. and Davis M. for looking after the PA.
Now we look forward the next year's event in term 2.

Interschool Sport
Last Friday, Nedlands Primary School sent 2 softball teams, 2 basketball teams and a cricket team to North Cottesloe Primary School for an interschool sport fixture. All teams acquitted themselves well and we were particularly pleased with the excellent level of sportsmanship displayed by both schools.
We had mixed results; winning one basketball game, both softball games but losing the cricket.
Our next Interschool event will be the Stuart MacGill Cup on Monday, 26th November. We have selected two strong teams and hope to have another successful day.

Primary Triathlon Championship 2012

The School Pool
Supported by your P & C and City of Nedlands
The coolest way to keep the kids entertained over summer.
For just $170 you can have your own key to the school pool, allowing your family to have a refreshing dip anytime from 9 am to 7 pm during the holidays and weekends (closed Christmas Day 2012) and from 3pm to 7pm on school days. It's a great way to socialise and catch up in the holidays.
Your pool membership includes a short 'in pool' rescue and resuscitation training/assessment session for at least one adult, at no additional cost - a valuable skill for any parent to have. If you already hold a current pool or surf bronze just bring your certificate along on the day and simply complete the paper work. The assessment will be held at the pool on Saturday 8th December from 9:00 - 9:30 for previous members and 9:30am -11 am for new members. You can pay your membership by credit card, cheque or cash on the day. Come dressed to get wet.
