Nancy's Style File: Ooh La La!

September 2015

Just when I thought I had scarves covered head to toe in my wardrobe, lo and behold the latest trend for fall, enter the long skinny scarf. We can credit the French design house of  Saint Laurent for this new take on a classic. One of my favorite European shopping blogs calls it insouciant. Hmm.

Insouciant: free from concern, worry, or anxiety; carefree; nonchalant.

I like it. Carefree is exactly what I am going for this season. In other words, super easy to wear.

Interestingly enough, the skinny scarf came on the scene last fall but did not make much of a splash. Consequently, this particular style didn't filter down into the stores and I was glad. I was not that impressed. Being a lover of beautiful scarves, I thought it looked ok, but seemed to me the design and color impact of a scarf as an accessory could easily be lost.

Example: close your eyes for a minute and see if you can describe the scarf shown in the photo above.
(The model appears to be in pain. Her jeans are clearly too tight.)
Ah ha. Just as I thought.
I can barely describe it myself and I'm looking right at it.

That said,  I'm beginning to like the way these look, so I just might try one. But, I don't really need a new scarf, do I?

This must be my lucky day. I have a skinny right here in my scarf drawer! A dear friend gave it to me as a gift and I"ve worn it, but certainly not as much as I'd like. The colors are beautiful , it's as light as a feather and it works!
(Thank you, Donna.)

The drapey bow look below is a great way to tie your skinny scarf when wearing a white shirt. Not nessesarily with leather, but . . . it does turn a plain crisp classic into interesting contemporary cool.

Two things I like about this lengthy look are:

1. You can purchase something new and fun for fall without making a large investment. (Unless, of course, you want to go with an Yves St. Laurent simple cotton scarf for $145.)

2. It's a very versatile accessory such that you can make it do just about anything you want it to do! You can tie it in a bow, tie it on your purse, tie it once loosely around your neck and sling one end over your shoulder ala insouciant, or, don't tie it at all.

So, my dear friends, please take a moment to look at the photos below and then you make the call. They run the gamut from $15 to $250 and you can see which ones are at what price at the Polyvore website. They have dozens to choose from.

If you're not sure which one would be best for your indiviual style and current wardrobe, or even how exactly to wear the scarf of your choice, you could make your call to me!
You know I would love to give you an assist. We can do a style consult, or I will shop with you or shop for you... any old way you want me to!

Next up in my October Style File?
Boots and leggings for the new season . . . are they in, are they out; what's hot, and what's not.

Meanwhile, let's all enjoy what precious little time we have of summer, shall we? Next thing you know, the leaves will begin to fall . . . and we will begin the absolute best fashion season of the year!
I say bring it on, Mother Nature.

Bring it on!

Nancy
