Nancy's Style File: Fashion Emergency: A Short Story

July 2015

Well, my friends, I did it. I bought a pair of short shorts with a gift card I received from my dear friend for my 69th birthday. I figured what better way to celebrate the last of my sassy 60's! But, now that I have these rather short, but very pretty linen shorts (they are even lined), I cannot decide if I will return or keep. Not that they aren't cute as can be and fit perfectly. They are and they do. But I do have issues . . .

The first issue and probably most important, is this:

Do I have the amount of sassy it will take to wear them in public? Will I be confident enough to feel fashionable and cool? Or will I be playing the ridiculous self-conscious game of what if?

What if they look too young? What if people are looking at me and rolling their eyes, or worse yet, laughing behind my back at the old lady trying to pull off shorts? (Not literally, of course. That would indeed deserve a hearty chuckle, I must say!)

The color shown is not right. They are a perfect wheat color wth a nubby texture that looks very authentically linen . . .

These are what the fashion magazines call city shorts, and they are not super casual backyard barbecue attire. No Sir.

Fortunately, I own a cool cream colored silk top that looks beautiful with the shorts, half tucked, and it elevates the look to classy uptown. ( Bare midriff on the model is very deceiving.) I'll likely wear them only when I go downtown to dinner or a play or such . . . and that would be how often? Not very, if truth be told.

But I want to wear these so much!

Second, I don't go out in the sun if I can help it, so in order to wear these aforementioned cute shorts, I spent an hour last night applying the Flash Bronzer self tanner from Lancôme (not cheap). Didn't realize the expanse of my leg circumference and that it would take almost an entire tube for a two-leg appropriate coverage job. Granted the color is just right, but the drying time? Good Grief. At home, in barefeet, and without any pants on, it takes hours. And then I'll need to reapply in only a week to two at the most.

Perhaps I just won't shower for a week? Uh huh. Right.

This is starting to sound like more time and trouble than it's worth.

And to top it all off, the Topshop website where I bought the shorts has a nasty 15 day return policy so I must make a decision forthwith. The good news is I can return them to any Nordstrom store... no need to mail back. And returns are free. Praise the Lord. (Nordstrom's has a Topshop department and it's really fun to peruse. Their items are mid-priced, good quality, mostly for millenials, very fashion forward, unique and sometimes wearable for us all!)

And last but certainly not least, there is the issue of my legs themselves. They are not fat! OK, maybe a wee bit droopy and veined, and a tiny bit lumpy, but whose aren't at almost 70? (Did I say that?)

But, may I say, I really like the way these shorts look on me.

So, my Dear and Faithful Readers, rather than give you my advice in this issue, I'm asking for yours. So many of you are more than a little style/fashion savvy, so please know I sincerely value your opinions.

Would you be willing to take just a quick moment to consider my dilemma and shoot me an email response?

Do you think me somewhat foolish to consider such a bold move? Or do you think I should throw caution to the wind and just go for it? I have a very important dinner date downtown this weekend and I need to know asap.

Will this short story have a happy ending?

Thank you!

Nancy
