Nancy's Style File: She Walks in Beauty

May 2015

Dear Readers,
I can smell it. I can always smell it. The scent is unmistakeable and intoxicating. It's spring. And to think, a mere month ago I was writing my April newsletter when it had just snowed four inches.
Yes, indeed. Spring has definitely sprung. Praise the Lord.

The fashion color of spring this year is blush. I don't know if it's actually a color, but I do know it's about the most flattering neutral one can wear. If you don't have anything in this shade of pale, soft, almost peachy pink, you should probably think about at least buying some lipstick or nail polish. We want to look modern, we want to look relevant. I bought both.

The older we get, the softer our makeup and nail color should be, says expert stylist Christopher Hopkins who is responsible for the extraordinary makeover you see above and author of Staging Your Comeback: A Complete Beauty Revival for Women Over 45.

But please take note: a soft natural look does not mean a no-makeup look. Rather, it means a minimal approach, softer colors and a lighter hand.

Almost all the cosmetic companies these days have neutrals that are very pretty and very easy to wear. Summertime is not the time you want to be running to the salon for nail repair work, so the lighter the polish and the more neutral the color, the less there is to maintain. Remember, the livin' is supposed to be easy this time of year . . .

Years ago, pink was MIA in the fashion world. It was considered unsophisticated and way too girly. Well, bright pink, the Pepto Bismol kind, never was and never will be a good idea unless you are five years old and it's your birthday. But if you want a shoe that you can wear with everything, a handbag that will go anywhere including a night on the town, or a little jacket that will blend rather than blind, blush is the way to go.

Ultimately, the most fashionable thing you can do to look chic this season is to go "minimalist". At least that's what most high-fashion bloggers are saying. For example, a T-shirt dress or a maxi skirt with a simple short sleeve T or a button front shirt would be great for weekends. And a minimal amount of jewelry, if any, is a must.

And for the career woman, the bare essentials in black, white, navy and tan are the bones of this look. But beware, my friends. Many ads and some of the fashion magazines show shorts for work with a blazer or a cropped jacket. I say please don't. What the fashion world embraces is not necessarily what the business world approves of. Trust me.

That said, for casual weekends and for all the outdoor activities that define summer, shorts are back in the forefront and if you have great legs, why not? Or if you are in a very warm humid climate, maybe shorts are just a way of life and who cares if you don't have perfect legs?

I was in Florida for a brief stay this month and it was HOT (so hot my hair was soaking wet within 30 seconds of walking slowly out the door). Oh, how I wished I had bought and brought some cute shorts to wear for walking, biking and boating. Fortunately, my companion had a spare pair I could wear, but I learned my lesson. I will most definitely buy and bring my own next time.

Ok . . . so, who wants to go shopping with me for shorts? ANYONE?

How about this:

Who wants to put away the black pants and shop for something cuter and lighter to wear this season?

Ah . . . Now I see those hands going up.

Thank you.
Nancy

Ps. Now is the time selections are the best for spring/summer shopping. Let's get that shopping date on the calendar, shall we?
