Nancy's Style File: Back To the Future

April 2015

Dear Readers,
Remember the saying "April showers bring May flowers" ? It's my mantra when coping with the dreary days of a short late spring. But today (it just snowed 4 inches) I can't help but wonder . . . does that include snow showers? And how exactly do the flowers feel about such a damp heavy blanket thrown over them as they are just beginning to pop up? I know how I would feel . . .
How rude!

I have decided that predicting the weather this time of year is a lot like predicting fashion trends. Good luck with that.

There was a time when I thought Vogue and Harper's Bazaar both had their respective fingers on the pulse of fashion such that they were always right about trends. Not true. Four years ago, jean jackets were proclaimed out by both magazines, so of course I believed it. I told everyone and proceeded to give mine away. (Ok, it was not a real sacrifice because I wasn't crazy about it.)

Jean jackets did in fact fade into the background temporarily, but they were never actually out, and it's likely they never will be. Women of all ages love 'em and refuse to let them go. They have become . . . dare I say it . . . iconic.

Honestly, I think there are numerous other jacket options out there that are a cut above denim and certainly more flattering, but of course, it's totally a matter of taste and choice. If you love it, you should wear it. Period.

First pair of white shoes I've seen that I love. This photo is from Banana Republic. Love their email ads too.

I also fancy myself a person who can easily spot a fad. For example, some 20 years ago a friend wanted me to see her latest clothing find. She went on and on about a new style pant called the capri and how it was so cute and so very reminiscent of the late Audrey Hepburn 50's look. My friend idolized Audrey Hepburn and therefore she loved these capris. She bought two pair. I looked at them with disdain thinking this style will never last. They are a terrible length and they are making my friend look short and somewhat dumpy. Right then and there I decided capris were fleeting and in a year (two at most) they would disappear from the face of fashion.

Well, here it is 2015 and they are still around. Slowly but surely they are waning in popularity, thank heaven, but now a new style . . . cropped wide leg pants abound and they are infiltrating our best shopping malls. I also saw culottes and I was appalled.

I simply cannot win.

But here's the good news. Thanks to current fashion retro-mania, bell-bottom jeans or flares as they are now called, are back and they look great. Boot cut jeans are also making a big comeback and wide-leg pants in general are in the stores . . . finally! I was right about that trend. It took longer than I hoped to catch on, but catch on it did. Glory halleluia. I have been talking about them for almost 3 years straight (November 2012 newsletter showing a Chanel suit from the spring 2013 collection).

Which style makes the model look the tallest?
I asked this question with this photo in 2012.

Next? These high waisted slim flares are the best. I have a pair of white jeans cut just like these for summer. I've yet to try them on this season, but like my swimsuit, this try-on thing can wait till it's absolutely 100% necessary. Please note that we are all wearing our pants somewhat longer this year. Unfortunately, I have a feeling my white jeans will be shorter on me. Truth time. It's called five more pounds.
Tailor time $.

All in all, this new season is going to be fun, retro, and those of us who were wearing bell bottoms in the 70's, never fear. We can wear them again. Of course we can. Not the exact same ones we wore before, please no! We want some new ones with the magic of lycra, thank you very much.

Like love, they are more comfortable the second time around.

Just ask me.

Peace, my brothers and sisters.

Nancy
