Nancy's Style File: More Trends for Fall

October 2014

Dear Readers,

The weather is spectacular, the political campaigns are almost over (thank heaven) and everyone is in a good mood. It must be autumn. So, let's talk fashion, shall we?

First, my very favorite subject . . . coats. I have a thing for coats and this year, the styles have definitely taken on some impressive new shapes. They are longer, fuller, bigger. Some are cocoon cut barrel shapes that I'm not crazy about, but others are sweeping and dramatic and just plain gorgeous. I want this one with the skirt, the sweater and the scarf.

In my dreams.

The Paris design House of Celine started the over-sized barrel trend (see below) a few seasons ago and it's still going strong in spite of the fact that I do not approve. Some people just don't get it.

The fun blanket style above is all the rage this season in New York City and who better to show it off than Sarah Jessica Parker. She is a petite person so I was surprised she could wear this so well. But here's the thing. Notice the monogram? Burberry custom made this for her and the proportions are just exactly right.

Collarless coats are also very IN. We are seeing lots of blazers and vests cut this way too. And honestly? I think a collarless blazer is much more practical than an overcoat with no collar; at least in this part of the country for obvious reasons.

And below, behold my all time favorite, the peacoat. Tried and true, classic and classy, the peacoat works for everyone. I particularly love the grey color for this season. Oh, and the grey handbag is perfectly proportioned for this pretty young model. Not too big, not too small, just right.

Shoes are looking new this season too. Flats and boots in particular are more interesting! (Round toe ballet flats are OUT, by the way. I keep saying this but no one is listening.)

Any height boot is ok this year including over the knee; but the coolest ones are ankle boots like the ones above from Chanel. I'll be looking for knockoffs in the stores come November.
And although I am loathe to mention this, athletic shoes are extremely trendy this year. NOT the New Balance gym shoes that we wear for running or exercise class (the N stands for NO-NO).

But rather, these retro looking cute sneakers above are totally cool to wear for running around town doing errands and the like. Strictly casual, of course. Not for me though. My feet are too big for this style. These make feet look bigger than big. Trust me. I tried.

Happy feet, happy fall, happy season one and all!

Best regards,

Nancy

PS. Don't forget, editing your closet is the right thing to do before you actually shop. Coincidentally, it's my specialty.

Let's do it together. It will be liberating! Or . . . forget the edit and let's just shop! I'm very good at that too.

Call or text me right now while you are thinking about it:
