So many trends so little time! Such was my dilemma while preparing this September issue. Thus, I decided to show more, talk less and prepare not one, but two issues of fall trends; one for now and one for October. Hold on, my friends. This is going to be one heck of a ride . . .
Granted, there's nothing earth shattering about black as the neutral du jour, but wearing it with white is new for fall. And it's most beautifully illustrated here by Audrey Hepburn's granddaughter Emma Ferrer. Can you see the resemblance?
And who says matchy-matchy isn't cool? We have a hat, a coat and a scarf all in the same pattern and color and I for one think it's stunning. That's another trend, by the way. Match your coat, sweater, bag and shoes. It's a four star look this season.
Did I mention that brown is back? We haven't seen it much in the last few years, so for those of us who crave all those delicious shades of chocolate, carmel, toast and cinnamon, we are in for a real treat.
And chunky knit sweaters are really REALLY big this year. Literally. The good news is they are warm, cuddly and plentiful in all the stores. The bad news is they are next to impossible to wear under a well fitted coat or jacket.

Then again, if I had a fabulous fur in my closet like this model is wearing over her chunky knit sweater, I would not care one iota if it didn't accommodate an overcoat. So, I'm a little chilled. Big deal.
As for accent colors, greens are very autumnal with all these scrumptious cocoa and chestnut browns. Any shade of green will do, but I like apple, forest and olive greens best. We are also seeing lots and lots of grey with brown; from tweedy charcoals, to soft doves to pale silvers and they all look super stylish. Last but not least, black and brown together remain the most sophisticated color combo of all. And that will never change . . . I hope.
Most of my photos today are from the 643 glorious pages of Harper's Bazaar September issue. Next month I'll show you more new shapes and styles and I'll make some definitive recommendations.
Meanwhile, stay cool and stay tuned.
Nancy
PS. Speaking of recommendations, editing your closet before you buy anything new is the perfect way to launch the new season. Coincidentally, it's my specialty!
