Nancy's Style File: Award Winning Fashion

March 2014

Dear Readers,

In order to make this Oscar show fashion thing a little more interesting tonight, I decided to have a little fun today. I am selecting glamorous dresses from various designers that I saw during NYC Fashion Week (on-line, not in person, heavy sigh) for my favorite nominees as if they were my clients. So, here's the question:
Did I nail it?

First, the queen of red carpet style in my eyes is Ms. Cate Blanchett. I would suggest she continue to show her unique sense of style by choosing something a bit avant garde or unusual. This cool number below is by designer Jason Wu and the somewhat sheer and slightly edgy silk fabric embellished with some lace and cut-outs at the waist would be ideal. This dress just looks like Cate to me. Now, if she doesn't want black for tonight, it would not surprise me because she did wear black to the Golden Globes this year.
So, Mr. Wu, let's do this. We'll take this dress for Cate, but let's make it dark midnight blue instead of black. Yes, that would be perfect.

Next on my best dressed list this year is the young and beautiful Lupita Nyong'o nominated for best actress in a supporting role. I saw this dress by Naeem Khan and decided it has Lupita written all over it; especially if she wins which I definitely think she will.
The shimmery texture and gold color will look luminous against her skin and her demure slender figure will be shown off to its fullest advantage. Ah youth!

And who does not love and admire Meryl Streep? I want to dress her more than I can say. She is a world class actor and if Cate Blanchett were not nominated this year, Meryl would win again for sure. I want her to look all elegant and regal . . .  like the Hollywood Royalty she is. This dress by Marchesa even has pockets which I know Meryl will love! And this cut will emphasizes her shoulders, her waist and her bodice while benevolently sweeping over her hips. The overall look is proportioned perfectly. Thanks. We'll take it.

I am crazy about actress Amy Adams. She is nominated for best actress but she's up against Cate Blanchett and Meryl Streep. (Uh oh. Bet she has no acceptance speech ready.) But as a nominee, she needs to look spectacular and this dress will do it. My mother always told me redheads look fantastic in red (Amy is a natural redhead). Took me a long time to buy it, but now I know she was right. Lately, Amy has been wearing lots of extremely low cut dresses to all the awards shows mirroring the 70's look she had in the movie American Hustle. I like this one by Reem Acra much better. It's still very low cut and daring, but more tastefully presented. And the color is exactly what my mother told me it should be.

I will try to post some photos of Meryl, Cate, Amy and Lupita in their chosen gowns on Facebook tomorrow. Like us on Facebook

As for tonight's show, no parties for me. I will be watching from my couch, hoping Ellen will be very funny and that my favorites will win. I'll be all wrapped in a cozy fleece throw with my favorite chardonnay within reach and I'll be trying to take notes on the fashion.

Hooray for Hollywood!
