Dear Readers,
Somewhere along the line, classic lingerie got lost in the shuffle of fashion and that makes me so sad. Maybe it happened when Madonna started wearing her underwear as outerwear or perhaps when shape-wear became so popular?
Today I wish to appeal to the younger generation and to make the case for something we older women have long known. Wearing great lingerie is still a great idea. Specifically, the slip.
Liz Taylor knew how to wear a slip. And if she were available for comment on the notion that slips are old-fashioned, passé and matronly, I can only guess what she might say. She was never one to mince words.
Can you picture Liz wearing Spanx?
When I asked for a male's perspective on slips, this was my friend's response:
"As a guy, I find women who wear slips very sexually appealing. Seriously, don't women know that?"
Honestly, I'm not sure they do. However, I do believe that just about every woman I know, no matter her age, wants to feel desirable; wants her clothes to feel sleek and comfortable; wants to be modern. A beautiful slip will fill the bill in all three categories. It will soothe and smooth you in a sensuous way making dresses and skirts look better, fit better, feel better. It will solve the modern dilemma of dresses and skirts with no linings. As you know, one is hard pressed to find any clothing items that are lined these days!
I recently read that Christiane Mack, who oversees editorial development and special projects for Vogue, lists a slip as one of her 5 essential wardrobe items.
"Various silk and/or lace slips for every day under dresses. They are comfortable, warm, and they keep everything smooth."
Cristiane has two young children, a very successful career and is considered to be one of New York City's Style Setters, according to Preston,
KIC blogger.
So, if you don't have one, I strongly recommend you buy one. Some upscale vintage shops stock authentic French silk slips. You can also find exquisite pieces in independent lingerie stores. But if you would be content with something other than expensive silk, try Victoria Secret or Nordstrom's on-line, or just google slips and you will see many retailers who carry them.
Of course, I would like to be sexually appealing . . . but I'll happily settle for the ability to avoid static cling.
Happy shopping!
Nancy
