Upcoming Exhibit:
Painting the Town: The Work of Rey Giese
Opening September 4, 2016
History San José is excited to announce our next exhibit will highlight acclaimed local sign painter Ray Giese. Born in San Jose, Giese created his own sign painting business from the ground up starting in 1935. Over the course of his storied career he hand-painted more than 20,000 signs in the Bay Area. Among his clients were local businesses, public organizations and political campaigns. His career spanned more than 75 years and this large collection of his work archives some of San Jose's long forgotten businesses and activities.

Painting the Town: The Work of Rey Giese will open Sunday, September 4 in conjunction with the San Jose Mini Maker Faire in the Arbuckle Gallery of the Pacific Hotel at History Park.
HSJ Members, join us for the Member & VIP Reception Wednesday, September 7, 5:30p - 8:30p in the Arbuckle Gallery of the Pacific Hotel at History Park.

San Jose Day Nursery
100th Anniversary!
The San Jose Day Nursery recently celebrated it's 100th anniversary and to help celebrate our curators put together a couple of pop-up exhibits for the occasion, along with our Portraits of the Past partners who dressed up for the event. Started in 1916, the nursery has been looking after children from the days of San Jose as a small farming community to today.
Our pop exhibit featured a collection vintage toys, as well as a hands-on display featuring old typewriters, rotary phones and cameras.Congratulations to the San Jose Day Nursery on 100 years, here's to 100 more!

Last Month's Object
Did you figure out what last month's artifact was? If you guessed candy cutter, you are correct! Used at The Sweet Shop in San Jose, this machine was designed to cut 150 strips of filled candies.
