Dear Friends,

2016 Valley of Heart's Delight
      2016 Valley of Heart's Delight
Big THANKS to everyone who joined us for our Valley of Heart's Delight event! We had a fantastic evening celebrating the past, present and future of San Jose and Santa Clara Valley! See some of highlights from the evening in this excellent short film produced by Jared Frazer and Tribute SF.

Thanks to the generosity of our guests, our Fund-a-Need raised more than $23,000 to help us continue to transform the Empire Firehouse into a interactive exhibition space.

This new exhibit space will serve over 130,000 visitors per year and educate thousands of students and visitors on fire safety techniques and the history of firefighting in Santa Clara Valley.

We are so thankful to all of our generous sponsors
particularly our lead sponsor
Linda L. Lester.

We are also grateful for the support of Gary Ashcavai, Carla Bohnett CB Photo Design Studio, Jared Frazer, Millers Vinyl GraphicsJohn Paulson Master Photographer, Anne-Caroline Wheaton Designs,
Bay Area Glass InstituteEpic Immersive, Fiddle Road, San Jose Jazz Boom Box, Greater Bay Area Costumers Guild and the San Jose Printers' Guild.

Thank you all!

Until next time,

Grand Opening of G & A's Gift Shop!

Join us Sunday, July 24 for the Grand Opening of G & A's Gift Shop. Thanks to the generous support of Linda Loew, the storage space next to O'Brien's Ice Cream Parlor has been transformed into a brand new gift shop. Join us at the ribbon-cutting for the latest edition to History Park!
Firehouse Update

Earlier this month we received a vehicle that will be incorporated into our newly redesigned Empire Firehouse exhibit. Courtesy of the San Jose Fire Museum, a large antique fire truck chassis has made its way to History Park. The truck is now being worked on by volunteers from our Restoration Shop and will eventually live outside the Firehouse for kids to explore and play on. Stay tuned for more updates!

Upcoming Exhibit:
Painting the Town: The Work of Rey Giese
Opening September 4, 2016

History San Jos is excited to announce our next exhibit will highlight acclaimed local sign painter Ray Giese. Born in San Jose, Giese created his own sign painting business from the ground up starting in 1935. Over the course of his storied career, he hand-painted more than 20,000 signs in the Bay Area. Among his clients were local businesses, public organizations and political campaigns. His career spanned over 75 years and this large collection of his work archives some of San Jose's long forgotten businesses and activities.

Painting the Town: The Work of Rey Giese will open Sunday, September 4 in conjunction with the San Jose Mini Maker Faire in the Arbuckle Gallery of the Pacific Hotel at History Park.

Museum Mysteries - What is that?!

Can you guess what this object is or what it was used for? Email your responses to jevins@historysanjose.org, and one lucky person with the correct response will win a special prize courtesy of History San Jos!  We'll post the answer in next month's newsletter.

 Last Month's Object

Did you figure out what last month's artifact was? If you guessed candy maker, you are correct! This machine was recently uncovered while clearing out HSJ's north warehouse. Made around late 1800s, the different rollers created a variety of shapes for making different candies. Thanks to everyone who wrote in with their guesses!
