Dear Friends,
We are excited to once again host the 2nd Annual Silicon Valley Bikes! Festival and Bicycle Show this Sunday, May 15th from 11:00am - 5:00pm at History Park.
This volunteer-run festival is a collaboration between History San José, Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition, the Mineta Transportation Institute, Gooseneck Bicycles Magazine, Pops Fabrication, Petite Galleria and Santa Clara Valley Brewing. Special thanks to volunteer extraordinaire, Diane Solomon, who's hard work made this fantastic event possible!
Last year's festival was a smashing success and this year promises to be even better! Join our Valley's racing, road, recumbent, mountain, BMX, cargo biking, custom, cruiser, fixed gear, low rider, recreation and bike polo playing communities, clubs, riding groups and their families for a day celebrating cycling and its long history in the Valley.
Join me for a day of family fun, great food trucks, craft beer, kids' activities, thrilling BMX stunt rider shows, music, amazing exhibitors, local artists, a spectacular bicycle show and more!
Until next time, Alida J. Bray President & CEO |
History San José Welcomes Our Newest Citizens

San Jose's City Manager, Norberto Duenas, an immigrant himself who came to the U.S. from Cuba, gave a moving address following the swearing in ceremony. We were honored to be a part of this special moment and proudly welcome our newest citizens! Check out more photos from the ceremony here. |
Tattooed & Tenacious in the News
Our latest exhibit, Tattooed & Tenacious: Inked Women in California's History, is in the news again. KQED recently put together a short video highlighting one of the show's featured local artists, Sarah Grossman. Thanks so much to Kelly Whalen and KQED Arts for putting this fabulous video together.

Collections Corner
Remember Summers Gone By at Our
Latest Pop-Up Exhibit.
Summer is just around the corner and our curators have created a new pop-up exhibit with objects and ephemera from HSJ's collection.
As leisure time increased during the post-World War II boom, so did the number of South Bay residents visiting the beaches of Santa Cruz, seeking to beat the summer heat. Check it out for yourself in the Pacific Hotel Lobby at History Park.
Museum Mysteries - What is that?! This month's Mystery Objects even have some of our curators stumped. Help us figure it out and send your guess of what these objects are or what they were used for? Email your responses to jevins@historysanjose.org. We'll post what we think these are in next month's newsletter.
Last Month's Object
Did you figure out what last month's artifact was? If you guessed ricer or juicer, you are correct! We had a lot of correct responses and great memories people shared about these. Marj Horn wrote in, "My Husband's Grandmother turned [their ricer] upside down, lined it with foil and made Christmas Tree fruitcake."
