the event, but still want to remember Manny's, or are looking for a uniquely San Jose gift, you can purchase a Manny's Cellar T-shirt from O'Brien's Ice Cream Parlor in History Park. The event and t-shirt sales help support our educational programs.
Find yourself in Timbuktu and missing History Park? No worries, now with our Google Cultural Institute partnership you can visit History Park from anywhere in the world! We keep researching new ways to make local history accessible to the broadest possible audience. This is an ongoing project to which we will continue to add information and images.
Please take a look now, and periodically check in on our progress by going on a virtual tour of History Park. Then check out our event listings below and come visit us in person. I hope to see you soon!
Many thanks,
Alida J. Bray

Recent Donations

Before there was Skype, email, or even cassette tapes, there was the "Letter
on a Record." During World War II, military personnel could enter a booth at USO clubs, operated by the National Catholic Community Service, and make an audio recording. The result was a two-sided, wax-coated cardboard disk, 6-1/2 inches in diameter and playable on a turntable at 78 r.p.m. that could be mailed to friends or loved ones back home.
Stevens Ranch Fruit Barn Restoration
Thanks to a generous grant of $109,000 from the Historical Heritage Commission of Santa Clara County, and in-kind support from our friends at MBA Architects, restoration and upgrades to the Barn have been completed by Garden City Construction.

Highlights include a new roof, new entrance stairs and seating area, an ADA compliant ramp, and a brand new lighting system. The Stevens Ranch Fruit Barn is home to the exhibit Passing Farms: Enduring Values curated, and based on a book written by Yvonne Jacobson which explores Santa Clara Valley's agricultural past.
The Barn is an integral part of many of our school programs serving more than 20,000 students each year. Now fund raising begins to help freshen up and enhance the interior exhibits! If you are interested in helping with this project, contact Michelle Powers at mpowers@historysanjose.org. |
