Dear Friends,
What a summer at History Park!
Our next adventure is the opening of our newest exhibit on Sunday, July 27 - Silicon Valley Bikes: Passion, Innovation & Politics Since 1880, the first-ever comprehensive museum exhibit on the history of cycling in the Valley. This one-of-a-kind exhibit celebrates the incredible culture, creativity, and community of the cyclists of Silicon Valley.

We are grateful to our guest curators - Terry Shaw (formerly of Shaw's Lightweight Cycles), Bess Hernandez-Jones (Northern California Velodrome Association and Bay Area Women's Cycling), Diane Solomon (community volunteer), and HSJ Curator Ken Middlebrook - for their tireless work to make this exhibit a truly community-curated effort.
On Friday, July 25, we are holding a special Member Reception Exhibit Preview of our Silicon Valley Bikes exhibit and we will be dedicating the Gallery in the Pacific Hotel to Clyde Arbuckle, avid cyclist and founder of the Museum. We want to encourage all of our Members to join us for this special preview and dedication. Please RSVP to Michelle Powers at mpowers@historysanjose.org or call 408-521-5016.
We want to express our gratitude to our generous exhibit sponsors: Garden City Construction, Wheel Away Cycle Center, Bicycle Express, San Jose Bicycle Club, Los Gatos Bicycle Racing Club Inc., Ampersand Ellipsis Jones LLC, and Hellyer Velodrome.
Thanks to your generous gifts, we are able to share this exhibit with the world. THANK YOU!
Until next time,
Alida J. Bray,
President & CEO

World Cup this year, but you can still re-live the World Cup glory days of our local players. Featuring 69 items from History San José's Soccer Legacy Collection including jerseys, trading cards, tickets, and even a pair of game-worn cleats, this new online exhibit in partnership with the Google Cultural Institute recognizes players such as Brandi Chastain, Landon Donovan, Boris Bandov, George Best, Jeff Agoos and many more, who have played here in San Jose and also represented their countries in international competition. See the Trolley on its First Day at History Park! In partnership with the California Audiovisual Preservation Project, and led by HSJ Archivist Cate Mills, we have made available 50 recordings from our collection on the Internet Archive, part of the California Light and Sound Collection! We're excited to be participating in this program, made possible through grant funding, which seeks to preserve recordings documenting California history.

Watch test films of Santa Clara's Rapid-Cleave Corporation Automatic Apricot and Plum Cutting Machine, and workers in the Richmond-Chase Canneries as they process asparagus, spinach, plums and pears. Re-live the 1960 Squaw Valley Olympics, and explore the Peninsula as it looked in 1966. Best of all, go back in time to see Ron Diridon inaugurate the trolley's first day in operation at History Park. You can hear interviews with early radio and electronics pioneers including Philo Farnsworth, William Hewlett, and Lee de Forest; see footage of the Stanford dish under construction, and hear Sputnik as it crossed overhead in 1957.
