Dear Friends,

On the 70th anniversary of the

D-Day invasion, History San José

affiliate Spirit of '45 accepted a WWII cargo truck, which will be restored to its original appearance by volunteers. The restored vehicle will debut at the Rose, White & Red Parade, and then at the Spirit of '45 event at History Park on Saturday, August 9th.

A brief ceremony was held after the truck was offloaded from the transport trailer, with a prayer for the fallen, and spectators singing "God Bless America" led by veterans Joe Gonzales, Jerry Rosenthal, Chaplain John Berger, Ray Nordahl, and Ysidor "Izzy" Sanchez, and a rendition of "Taps" on a sole trumpet. The arrival of the truck and efforts to fundraise for the restoration was also covered by Damien Trujillo from NBC-11 in this video

You may not know that Frank Fiscalini, our 2014 Valley of Hearts Delight honoree, is also a WWII veteran who served in the US Army. For more information about this event and the opportunity to raise a glass to Frank, please check out the panel on the left.

We are proud that History San Jose has become a Blue Star Museum and joined more than 2,000 museums across America to offer free admission to the nation's service members and their families from Memorial Day, May 26, 2014 through Labor Day, September 1, 2014. We are grateful for the opportunity to share History San Jose with our service members from WWII to the present. We thank you for protecting our past and future.

Alida J. Bray,

President & CEO

Spotlight on the Alan Glover Collection
In April 1994, San Jose resident Alan Glover set off on a bicycle tour around the world, finishing in September 1998. Glover is pictured here in Australia with the recumbent bicycle that he powered through Europe, South America, Asia and Australia. His collection, donated to History San Jose, includes his bicycle and equipment, over 60 postcards that Glover wrote from the road detailing his journey, and 132 photographs documenting the people and places he encountered along the way. Glover's bike will be on display as part of the upcoming exhibit, "Silicon Valley Bikes: Passion, Innovation & Politics Since 1880," opening in July at the Pacific Hotel.

Glorious Geissler Tubes!
The Perham Collection of Early Electronics at History San Jose contains several Geissler tubes. Named after Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Geissler (1815-1879), these tubes were used in the late 1800s to early 1900s to demonstrate the principles of electrical glow discharge. Click here to see us demonstrate one particularly fanciful tube in action. You can see more Geissler tubes at HSJ's YouTube channel

Japanese Film Crew Explores Collection Center
A film crew from Japan came to the Collection Center to shoot objects for a Japanese TV program called "The World's Astonishing News," which is a documentary styled entertainment program to introduce unusual stories from around the world. The program will cover stories related to Sarah Winchester and will be broadcast in Japan this summer.
