Meet Topo!
Visitors who tour our Collections Center are usually shown the "Topo" robot, part of the

Perham Collection of Early Electronics. Thanks to research by one of our volunteers,
Ralph Simpson, we now know that our Topo is actually the first commercially manufactured version! Topo was made in 1983 by Androbots, Inc., conceived and founded by Nolan Bushnell, the founder of Atari and Chuck E. Cheese Pizza-Time and Theaters Chain. The Robot's purpose was to teach programming to school children, as you can see in the photo above. Topo has two wheels and fixed arms, and can be programmed through an Apple II interface to execute basic movements. Three versions were manufactured. Our Topo is a model 1 with serial number T0183001.

New Donation!
The image above is part of a donation from Sara Ralls of 259 glass plate negatives found in 2012 in an attic on Julian Street in San Jose. They include turn of the century images of local baseball teams, retail stores and other buildings, Golden Sons of the Native West events, and political stumping. Thanks to work by the California Pioneers of Santa Clara County, who cleaned, scanned, and researched the images for us, they are now available to the public through our online catalog at historysanjose.pastperfect-online.com.
