Don't Miss It!
GrizzlyRag

Bear in Mind: The Story of the California Grizzly  closes on Sunday, December 15. Come see this fascinating exhibit before it closes!

From the Collection
NEW GIFT! This is our favorite gift to the collection this month!   It's a child's rocking horse, beautifully crafted from the estate of Winnefred Coe Verbica.  She was the great grandduagher of Henry Willard Coe who settled in San José in the 1850's. It is rare to find children's toys in such good condition. We want to thank Jeni Strouss for her generous gift to the permanent collection.

NEW ACCESS! Staff has added new collections records to our online catalog and PrintRoom gallery.  New are 143 historic images of the San Pedro Square neighborhood.

NEW RESEARCH!  We are proud to have the following new publications whose authors conducted a major portion of their research at History San José's Research Library & Archives:
  • Palm Haven (Images of America), by Michael Borbely and Brian Hoffman
  • 19th Century San Jose in a Bottle, by Tobin Gilman
  • Cyril Frank Elwell, Pioneer of American and European Wireless Communications, by Ian L. Saunders
  • The Mineral Springs of Santa Clara County, by Ian L. Sanders
  • Garden of the World: Asian Immigrants and the Making of Agriculture in California's Santa Clara Valley, by Cecelia M. Tsu

History San José has a passion for sharing our local history, which leads to some creative community partnerships that we're really proud of.  Our most recent partnership project is with the Chinese Historical and Cultural Project who had an initiative to bring their Chinese American Historical Museum at History Park into the 21st Century. Working with Stanford University's Public Archeology class, students created QR codes and content that was added to the Museum. Now you can go deeper and find in-depth information about artifacts from the Market Street Chinatown Archaeology Project.

We also partnered with the San Jose Museum of Art on their Around the Table project--where thought-provoking programs explore a broad range of topics related to food. Two young artists, David Burns and Austin Young, created a stunning artwork from images they chose from HSJ's collection. Their piece honors the hard-working women from the Valley of Heart's Delight. The exhibit just opened and runs through April 20, 2014. This is another not to be missed exhibit at SJMA!

And finally, I had a blast when the San Jose Convention Center opened with Community Day in October.  We staffed a table where we offered a glimpse into the not-so-distant past with a Royal manual typewriter, c.1924; a Computation (adding) machine, c.1940; a Bell rotary telephone, c.1945; and a Kodak Duplex Camera, c.1955 from our education "please touch" collection. The HSJ table was without a doubt one of the most popular attractions with our strange machines! Most children had no idea what the items were--even the telephone!  October ended with our annual "scare-free" Haunt History Park. We want to give a special thanks to California Janitorial Supply for providing all the toilet paper for the "Wrap-A-Mummy" contest--always a crowd pleaser!
