Service Learning Day Photos
Foote's first Service Learning Day, on April 27, was a huge success. The entire school (480 students and around 80 faculty and staff) participated in more than 40 community-service projects on campus and around New Haven. Working in mixed-grade groups, students refinished furniture for refugee families; cooked breakfast for homeless individuals; built bookcases for Horizons; cleaned litter from parks, neighborhoods and beaches; read to Celentano School Kindergartners; made flashcards for children in the Dominican Republic; and so much more.

Claim Your Lost & Found Items
With the warm weather (and shedding of layers) the lost-and-found bins are overflowing. If you are missing anything, please take a few moments to look for your belongings. (Bins are located in the main building, the 6th-7th grade hallway, and the gym locker rooms).
Lost and found items will be placed in the Sturley Room for collection after the May Day celebration on Friday, May 26. Items not claimed by the end of the school year will be donated to a charity.

Parent Volunteers Still Needed for Faculty Appreciation Breakfast
The Faculty Appreciation Breakfast is Thursday, May 18 in the Twichell Room. This is a wonderful opportunity to express our appreciation to the Foote faculty and staff for supporting our children's education and well-being throughout the year.
This event is sponsored by the PTC and supported entirely by Foote parents who provide breakfast items and flowers and plants for our annual flower raffle. Please consider donating to this enjoyable event. Click here to sign up to bring food, flowers or both. Your help is greatly appreciated. Non-perishable items can be dropped off in the Twichell Room on Monday, May 15 or Tuesday, May 16, clearly labeled "Faculty Breakfast." Perishable items should be labeled and put in the refrigerator, and hot items should be brought in between 6:30 a.m. and and 8:30 a.m. on Thursday. We have a microwave, an oven and warming dishes, if needed.
Please remember to label your bowls and/or serving utensils and please pick up any time after 10:30 a.m.

Close-Up: Understanding Identity in Second Grade
Imagine someone doing each of these jobs: dancer, teacher, firefighter, doctor, police officer. Who do you see? How is your idea of these professions framed in terms of gender, race, age and ethnicity?
Grace Peard, Cara Hames and Susie Grimes asked their first and second graders these questions as a way to focus on the concept of identity as part of their social studies curriculum. The teachers shared several books about people who were treated unfairly because of their "social identity." These biographical stories opened a series of wide-ranging conversations about stereotypes and justice.
In Grace's room, students' responses were crafted into a poignant bulletin board display, divided into two categories: Injustice and Equality. Around the edges of the bulletin board, the children added colorful and detailed frames to represent the individual perspectives and biases through which we each view the world and the people we encounter.
