Placement Decisions for Next Year

For parents of Grades K-4:

In the coming month, we will begin making sections, or classes, for the 2017-2018 school year. If you have information about your child that you think will support us in our efforts to create these sections, please contact Head of Lower School Beth Mello directly (203-777-3464, bmello@footeschool.org). While we are not able to meet every specific request or insight, we can certainly use the information you provide to inform our process.

If you'd like to meet with Beth Mello, please schedule an appointment through Erika Villa (evilla@footeschool.org).

Help Support the Faculty Appreciation Breakfast

The Faculty Appreciation Breakfast is Thursday, May 18 in the Twichell Room. This is a wonderful opportunity to express our appreciation to the Foote faculty and staff for supporting our children's education and well-being throughout the year.

This event is sponsored by the PTC and supported entirely by Foote parents who provide breakfast items and flowers and plants for our annual flower raffle. Please consider donating to this enjoyable event. Click here to sign up to bring food, flowers or both. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Non-perishable items can be dropped off in the Twichell Room on Monday, May 15 or Tuesday, May 16, clearly labeled "Faculty Breakfast." Perishable items should be labeled and put in the refrigerator, and hot items should be brought in between 6:30 a.m. and and 8:30 a.m. on Thursday. We have a microwave, an oven and warming dishes, if needed.

Please remember to label your bowls and/or serving utensils and please pick up any time after 10:30 a.m.

DayInLifeA DAY IN THE LIFE OF FOOTE

Close-Up:
Teaching and Learning, Across Generations

Today is Service Learning Day at Foote, when the entire school is participating in more than 40 separate community-service projects around greater New Haven (look for photos in next week's E-News). Service learning has been a part of the Foote experience for years and takes many forms. A new project this year is the fourth grade's partnership with the Whitney Center. Every three weeks or so, fourth graders spend part of a morning visiting with elderly residents at the retirement facility and sharing projects such as "Getting to Know You BINGO" and poetry writing.

On Tuesday, fourth graders visited their Whitney Center buddies to create "affirmation rocks" -- they cut out words and letters from magazines to make positive affirmations, which they pasted artfully onto stones. These sharing activities are really a vehicle for the larger purpose of the initiative, says fourth grade teacher John Climie. "It's really about socializing with another age group and developing interpersonal skills."

Whitney Center resident Sandy Schreiber says the experience has been enriching for him and his fourth grade friends alike. "They learn that senior citizens are people--we're not senile, we're with it," Sandy says. "They can also learn that we're not scary. Kids don't always have a chance to talk to older people who are not their family, and this gives them an opportunity."

Foote Students Shine at COLT Poetry Contest

On Tuesday, 23 Foote students competed in the CT COLT poetry recitation contest at Bristol Central High School. They recited poems in Chinese, French, Latin, Spanish and Russian as language scholars and as heritage speakers. Three students won two medals for reciting in two different categories. "The results were staggering and we are so proud of all the kids!," says Modern Language Chair Hayden Holt. Here is the list of all the students who made it to the state competition as well as medal winners.
